  • Walbro 255 fuel pump install pics, question about small black hose hook up

Well, me and dad, installed the new Walbro 255 fuel pump. Everything went ok. However as you will see in the pics below, one part of the casing did not fit onto the new pump. Still searching to see what the little black hose does, however, the new fuel pump does not have any vent area on the bottom or top like the old fuel pump did. The Walbro 255 does have a hole in the same place where the black hose hooks in to the old pump, but has not attachment that will allow the hose to hook there. Again, still searching for what that black hose does, or if anyone knows what the purpose of the black hose is, please let me know. I started the Camaro and it idles fine, plus drove it around the yard and up the drive way, everything seems A ok. Going to install the 36lb injectors tomorrow :) Here are the pics of the fuel pump install, sorry I didn't get to take more, but after getting gas all over me an then finding the Walbro 255 had no place to hook the black hose, plus it was a pain to fit it into the stock casing, I kinda forgot to take more pics, was just glad to get everything hooked back up...

A little tip, when installing the new Walbro 255 in the stock casing, first install it fully in the rubber boot, then take some fuel system cleaner and wipe and wet the inside of the plastic casing, then the rubber boot, with the Walbro 255 will work, it will be a tight fit, but it will pop into place. The Walbro 255, is a little larger than the stock fuel pump.

I've got a question for you. Is there any gluing involved in replacing just the pump? I had mentioned it to my shop when we ran a test and found that the rpm of the current pump is low and they were saying how it's a gamble about the glue for the bucket that the pump sits in. Any truth to that?

if you keep the bucket assembly, yes you will have to glue it back together as it seperates to get the pump out. On my car I just ditched the bucket and zip tied the pump to the metal arm assembly.

The small hose is for the jet pump, which keeps the bucket full.
They sell direct replacement pumps for the 99+ plastic tank cars.

Go to fullthrottlespeed.com and search for ls1 fuel pump.

X2 on ditching the bucket, I used 2 big hose clamps and tightened everything together.

I'm guessing the 2000-02 are different from the pre 2000's, not for certain if the 99's are like mine or not. In my Haynes manual, the pre-cars, looked like it was some kinda arm or something??? I kept the bucket, it was a tight fit for the new fuel pump, but it worked, the only thing that confused me was the little black hose that would not hook up to the walbro 255.

I've heard that the bucket, in effect, is used to keep fuel surrounding the pump to cool it. Doesn't getting rid of it expose the pump to the air, thus, less cooling? Or is it that the pump will be submerged enough even without the bucket assembly?

Re: Walbro 255 fuel pump install pics, question about small black hose hook up

From what I've read, plastic tanks (99+) do not have baffles like the
metal tanks to keep the fuel from sloshing. The jet pump keeps the
bucket full so the fuel pump doesn't run dry during corning or when
the tank gets close to empty.

I didn't have to use any glue to reuse my bucket. That must be an
                  earlier model thing.
