  • Can't decide what I want to do with my car...

    I have ALOT of questions...

First off regarding the stroked3800's 4.2L stroker kit. The LOW CR Stroker Kit, how much power will it net me without a turbo with a mild cam added? I was thinking of installing it and adding a turbo later but if it winds up leaving me with LESS than the stock 200 HP then I will leave it alone. With the Turbo though, how much power can I expect from the 4.2L stroker kit and what cam would I need to run?

For the N/A version of the stroker kit, is there any kind of cam I can run that would give a STREETABLE 370 - 400 HP? I was under the impression that the more displacement you have, the more aggressive cam you could use for streetable applications. Like an aggressive drag cam for the 3.8 might be streetable for the 4.2 if you get what I mean.

Part of me wants to be unique and quick which calls for...
    ----------------
4.2L Stroker Motor, P&P Intake Manifold, Heads, Cam, FRA/LID, Full Exhaust (True Duals with High Flow Cats, Resonators, and Bullet Mufflers), Stiffer Suspension.

Advantages - Keep stock transmission, no motor swap and trying to figure out wiring harness stuff... Should be good for some pretty good power, estimating 360 - 400 FWHP??? (depending on how aggressive the cam is).

Disadvantages - Never done anything internal motor so the shop is going to charge me HELL unless I learn to do all this myself, Have to get it tuned, a tedious and time consuming project.
    ----------------
Another part of me however can't sacrifice that V8 rumble and knows in time I'll miss that V8 tourque and potential...
    ----------------
5.7 LS1 Swap, Mild Cam, Full Exhaust (True Duals with High Flow Cats, Bullet Mufflers). Should be good for an easy 430 HP. Boltons alone wake up the LS1's.

Advantages - PLENTY of potential left in the motor if I ever get bored with my power level, FAST Intake and Heads can come later if desired.

Disadvantages - The motor swap itself is thought to be a PITA. New trans, New rearend, fuel pump, fuel lines, PCM, and the mother of all issues, wiring. Not to mention I'll also have to upgrade the suspension but that would happen even in my V6.
    ----------------

    Other random technical questions
    ---
How much HP can the stock A4 handle?
How much HP can the stock 10 Bolt Rear handle (I always thought up till around 350ish?)
Why cant the V6 A4 boltup to an LS1 and can any form of adapter accomidate that?
Overall, which is less expensive, the 4.2L setup or the LSX conversion?

Ultimately a stroked motor would be awsome if I could output 400 HP without a turbo, or even with a Turbo it would still be cool and would stand out quite a bit and a supporting suspension setup along with gears would give me an edge over most V8 cars.

Reason I'm considering all this work is my car is about to be paid off and it's a Firebird and it's the last year they made them so I will have an "classic hotrod" if I keep it instead of trading it for a faster Z28. Sure a T/A would be a hotrod too, but they're hard to come by.

    My options

    Choice A - 4.2L Stroker setup
Choice B - 4.2L Stroker setup with Turbo
    Choice C - LSX Conversion
Choice D - Sell the Firebird for $6k and put $2k with it for a downpayment on a 1LT 2010 Camaro (But I'll be making payments)
Choice E - Sell the Firebird for $6k and put $2k with it and buy a 2001 - 2002 Camaro Z28 or T/A and full bolton mods.

I'm too lazy to read (sorry)...but by your choices on the bottom I would say sell it and get the Trans Am first (notice I said T/A and not Z28, lol), or get the 2010 Camaro, but I'm only saying that because...well...its a 2010 Camaro, lol.

    Good Luck

you want a project car...start researching setups and do a custom setup on your firebird...these cars have tons of potential to be had...

My future plans are a 4.2L stroker from SWAN racing; low compression with a powerdyne setup pushing 9psi. Already figured out a fairly aggressive, but still streetable (I hope atleast :P) cam, ported heads, and a set of longtubes :). I'd be looking for around 400rwhp with that once tuned right.

Sick. That is my plan pretty much down to the last bit, cept for I might get cheap and add a bit of spray to squeak out that little bit more. But it will take me forever and the order in which it takes place will be different from yours.... whats the deal on this cam you speak of? :D :poke:

It will take forced induction or nitrous to get 400hp out of the v6.

I'm a college student who already has two car payments, so buying a ls1 car is kind of out of the question for the time being. I've already got a dd and i want to mod the camaro and keep it as my "hot rod'. lol

X2, unless your going to run 12-15 PSI on a built motor then you can make 350 - 400 WRHP. This is why I added a 02' LS1 on my Hptuners incase I want to do a LS1 swap in the future if the turbo doesn't work out.
                            08' L76 6.0L 4X4 Chevy EXT.Cab LTZ Vortec MAX with Snug top cover, Dynomax exhaust,Hptuners& K&N intake
96' Camaro M5 to A4 conversion, alot of mods . GT35R Turbo full suspension. Built engine

Yeah - In that case I will either do an LS1 swap or buy an LS1. Can I ask why our A4 transmissions cant bolt up to LS1's? is there any way to fix that?
