my 3.1 malibu makes a sound like that once in a while ... it'll do it for like 10 minutes then go away and wont do it again for a month ... i checked my rockers ... they were fine ... after listening closer i realized it wasnt from the top end but it doesnt sound like a rod knocking ... i've been told its common with the 3.1's to have piston slap or problems with wrist pins ... i know you dont have a 3.1 but it could be the same issue ... i've put about 50,000 miles on my car since the first time it did it ... but like i said mine comes and goes
I've got the idea in my head that it's an oiling problem. I'm about due for a change so that's definitely happening tomorrow.
I don't really know how the oil flows or even gets to lifters for that matter so, i've also got this notion that I need something to restrict the oil flow to my turbo somewhat so it gets to the rest of the engine as it should. Researching negligence on my part.
mine started making that exact sound when my header gasket blew, i thought i was something in the head like a lifter or rocker or something, but just the gasket , hopefully its nothing major
just a littler air comming out, you couldnt really feel it, you could just hear it tapping

So how did you figure out it was your header gasket anyways?
after listening to it for a while, it made for of a pat, pat, pat, pat sound rather than like a tap, tap, tap sound like a lifter or something, and also at wot it was alot louder so i knew something was leaking
I'm so tired of messing with my exhaust pipes. So tired. But, seems as if tomorrow will be a full work day for me. I'm going to change my oil, and remove my passenger side header. This could explain the wideband inaccuracy. 2 birds with one stone would be nice. Fuggin exhaust pipes. This is sad but I'm getting tired of working on my car.
Blizz, you should have a restrictor for your feed like .065 or something, mine is smallar since it takes less oil at .035 and the return should be at least -10an/ 1/2". I bought a oil PSI kit from intense that raises oil PSI to like 80 PSI. Do you run synth. oil. For the turbo you should run a thicker oil like 10w40 if it is hot enough out. I run RP 20w50 and oil PSI is always around 60 PSI most of the time, then with the dual oil filters I'll see if that ups it anymore since it will be 6 qts of oil to fill it or I'll install my PSI kit to raise it more if need be..

You can never get tired of working on a Camaro, Firebird maybe ,lol But not on a Camaro , esp. one with a turbo. I still have alot to do to mine, its my hobby.LOL

ya i know, i love working on it, but sometimes a day off is nice ha, ive been slowly working on wrapping my dash with leather, but 105* in my garage is not fun

I know my return is large enough but I wasn't sure about restricting the feed line to the turbo since I asked the guy I bought it from and he said it wouldn't need it. But then again this guy is a diesel turbo guy so... Yeah, i'm gonna get on that asap.
I used pennzoil platinum full synth, 10w30. After driving the oil pressure is noticeably lower.
So about the restrictor though, what the hell should I use? I think I remember hearing about nitrous jets... I don't know how big the feed line is off hand. I do know it's the same size as the fuel rail schrader valve port.
So I looked it up.
The recommended oil feed for journal bearing
turbochargers is -4AN or hose/tubing with an ID of
approximately 0.25”.
And I'm pretty sure that's about exactly what I have.
i'd agree with fondle and say hopefully it's a header leak from the gaskets or bolts backing out. i had the exact same sound about two weeks after i put in my headers and did some searching and found that one of my stage 8 bolts wasn't locked all the way and had backed most of the way out. checked the gaskets and tightened everything back down and no problems since.
