I've always heard to have it taken off professionally to avoid cracking the windshield...
Most of the time you can just mount a new mirror onto that same metal piece, if that won't work, you can always glue the new piece that comes with the mirror on top of the one that's there... that's what I did in one of my other cars and it worked fine and was unnoticeable
Rebuilding the engine... Building a custom front end... T-top conversion... Custom rear hatch..
Custom interior...
And yeah I sorta cracked the windshield a little... I just left it alone lol. Ima just try to glue or put some tape around the ball joint to keep it in place.
If you're talking about just the mirror and plastic part, then all you gotta do is take the set screw out or loosen it and then slide the whole thing up parallel to the windshield.
If you were talking about the metal thing under the mirror, then I feel retarded.
mine falls off every 10seconds because of my subs, i need to figure how to keep mine on? and which part are you trying to get off? if its the part on the windshield i would try windex and a razor blade or something and scrape it off
As for the windshield I'm not that worried its the original one and it has other huge cracks on it already so Ima just let it take its toll and get a new one down the road.
The mirror isnt the hard part, its just a ball joint just pull on it and it comes off remember to take the wired plug off it first that powers the reading lamps.
The piece thats attached to the windshield, I'm not sure if its glued or something, but I got a flathead screwdriver and got it partially off and I swear it looks like a magnet holding it in place. I know the firebird ones can screw off but on the camaro theres nothing to screw off.
I'm going to get just some clear tape and wrap it around or something I'll let you guys know.
you have to twist it till it stops, then twist more. You will hear a pop and it comes off. Thats how you get them off. You think you are gonna break something but you dont.

no the mirror came off. I mean the piece thats stuck on the windshield.
if you have a butane torch, heat it a little ... you have to be careful when you do it ... windshields dont like to be heated quickly ... just put the torch on the mount for 3 or 4 seconds ... pry it a little with a screwdriver or putty knife
the extension that connects the mount to the actual mirror came off with the mirror.
My understanding is that you can remove the mirror off the mount but with the extension still on the mount right? Since mine came off with the extension piece on the mirror I figured it was messed up, the side of the extension that goes to the windshield mount is actually grinded and sort of damaged.
So i got a replacement one but need to remove that windshield mount..
Hey everyone! I've been trying to remove my transmission for two days now! I need to replace the clutch. Only thing I've got left holding the transmission...
Hello, so I changed the front bearings on the bird and the ABS inoperative light came on. I made a mistake of not removing negative battery cable. Now...
I usually have to double, triple my headlight switch for them to come up on my 97 Firebird. I cleaned all connections. Could it be the headlight switch...
