  • Anyone Spray Paint Polished Rims?

Hey all, I didn't want to 'jack Freaks thread so here I am.

Anyone successfully paint polished aluminum rims using spray paint? I've painted aluminum rims but never polished ones. Thanks for any tips you all may provide.

Duplicolor sells kits for doing this... they actually have one that is almost like a black tint that goes over chrome or polished aluminum that gives the appearance of the "hyper black" rims...

biggest tip I have is to make sure the rims are clean clean clean before you even think about painting... some paints won't require much sanding, but a light scuff is always a good idea... gr8schlotzky is the one to talk to, but I'm sure he'll chime in before too long

I'd say the key for painting a polished aluminum rim would be to really rough up the surface. Paint won't stick well to glassy smooth aluminum, so there will probably be quite a bit of sanding involved if you want the finish to stick around a while. My only experience with Duplicolor wheel paints was not good, but my experience may not have been the norm. I used a silver for my DD wheels and it was uneven and translucent. This could make a cool effect if the black is the same way, in the way that T-mill mentioned.

Page 3 of my cardomain has a little writeup on wheel painting if you want to check that out.

Same idea as Niteshades. It's translucent black so some of the original finish will shine through.

Re: Anyone Spray Paint Polished Rims?

Thanks guys. I have used DupliColor etching primer, paint and clear with excellent results but that was on a set of non polished aluminum rims. I am very interested in a paint that would achieve a "black chrome" look, what is it called?

As far as sanding polished rims to give the paint some "bite" what grit should I use? Wet sand or dry?

I couldn't find the kit on duplicolor's website and I can't remember what the kit is called, but I believe it's the duplicolor "Metalcast" spray paint... it comes in alot of colors, the one you would want for the black chrome look would be the smoke color...

Probably 400 grit wet sand if you are not going to use primer. With primer, 220 grit and that would get you a better hold. But if you want a good painting surface AND the original finish to come through, 400 is probaby your best bet, just make sure you get it nice and dull.

I haven't seen it. But according to T-mill, it's by Duplicolor. The smoke color. Read the thread, lol.

Re: Anyone Spray Paint Polished Rims?

Hey Schlotz, would you still recommend 220 grit if I used regular Duplicolor instead of the metalcast? If I do this, I WILL use Duplicolor etching primer and a clear as well.

I snooped around some other sites concerning the use of Duplicolor metalcast and from what I read, it is not recommended for rims, I guess it is a question of durability. Who knows for sure but the items I saw painted with it looked great.

I don't mind the look of my polished rims but since the car will sit outside all spring/summer/fall I don't want to deal with the maintenance as they get dirty so fast. The Firebird rims I painted black last year held up great and never looked too dirty even when they were. What to do...

Yeah, I'd say 220 grit would be the best bet. The rougher the surface, the better the paint can hold. (to an extent, obviously)

Yep, I'd say 220 as well... with the metal cast I'd use 320, or like Gr8 said 400...
