  • School me on Halo's & Projectors..

Alright.. I was going to do the whistler mod this weekend, but I don't really feel like taking a chance on damaging my stock headlights (which are new OEM replacements btw..) Someone a few weeks back on another thread suggested that I go with Halo's or projector's.

I have seen them on Camaro's, I have seen a handfull of different styles on ebay, but honestly I don't know anything about either and would like to be educated. Is it also possible to use the black Halo style headlights with Sylvania Silverstars and not the blue bulbs? Honestly, when a car passes me with blue bulbs, it kidna pisses me off because I can't see. Will I encounter problems with the local police?

    Please, educate me!! :stp:

^Not quite what he was asking...

Halos are basically stock replacements with just a few extra wires to hook up for the halos... There are different ways to wire them up depending on when you want the Halos to be on. You can wire them to turn on with your foglights or when the ignition is on, or just wire a seperate switch so you can turn them on or off independently from anything else...

As far as projectors, Gr8Schlotzky is the one to talk to, I'm sure he'll chime in

projector halo's dont come with the "blue" lights or hid's, that's all done after the fact. they come with halogens and it's up to you to change the look if you like.

mine with brand new halos (no mods, excuse the crappy cell pic):

and with aftermarket 8000k hid's in the lows and fogs:

Projectors are just a style of light housing. The two main types are free form and projector. Sealed beams could be considered another type but are basically free forms. Your stock headlights as well as most 90s and 00s cars use free forms. Projectors are essentially free form lights that are projected into a cutoff plate which makes a shadow of sorts over half of the beam pattern, and the light then goes through a lens which projects the light onto the road. They have the ability to be much more evenly distributed with less bright spots and a better cutoff than free forms.

You can use whichever bulbs you like with projectors, it's just that projectors are better suited for HIDs, which put out much more light, which is why people use them.

Thanks for the information. Sooooo.. out of all the styles of projector headlights that I see running around online (and I prefer black housings), which would you recommend? Are any plug & play? My headlights are on the factory setting and activate automatically on start-up, or when I drop the emergency brake. I honestly don't want to wire anything. I want to install the headlights, slip my Silverstars in and be on my way.

I also wanted to mention that I do not use the foglights. The '99 Camaro that I owned in '04 would constantly blow foglight bulbs and I finally quit replacing them. I remember that the bulbs cost around $15-20 each. Both bulbs in my '00 were shot when I bought the car on 2.22.10 and I haven't considered replacing them for that exact reason.

Here.. I made a thread on this with pictures. It's a super easy way to wire up halo/projector lights.

You can buy 894 bulbs on eBay for less than 10 bucks a pair if you prefer. But since you don't use them, you could wire the halos into your fog light switch, or just wire them into your DRL or running light circuit, it's super easy. Worst case you just don't hook them up, they will still work as headlights, just won't have the extra stuff.

I guess I could wire them to the foglights. Have you or anyone else had problems with the foglight bulbs constantly blowing out?

Re: School me on Halo's & Projectors..

I did. It was basically because of a bad gasket on the pigtail and water getting onto the bulbs. Turned out my whole pigtail got warped too, so a little silicon did the trick.

Thanks for the info Blizzard, before I put new bulbs in I will check the housings and gaskets. That could have been my problem with the '99, but maybe my '00 is fine.
