  • Roof bubbles are everywhere..

My 2000 Camaro T-Tops has broken out with a rash of roof bubbles. When I purchased this car in February 2010, there were not any bubbles. Today I counted 27 on the roof, three of which have cracked.

I'm curious as to what I can do to stop or prevent more bubbles? I will not have the roof repainted.. it can crack and look like hell for all I care.

The paint on my doors, a spot on the sail panel and a few spots on the trunk have already spider-cracked. Don't know what thats all about as the car is in above average condition for it's age and the paint is an 8 out of 10.

The bubbling paint on the sail panel is a common problem for certain years. Only "real" fix is to tear the panel off and install a new one as it was something to do with the glue iirc. There was a TSB for it I believe. The "spider cracks" is probably your clear coat. Give it some time and it will start to flake right off. That would just have to be repainted.

*Edit* Here's everything you should need about the sail panel http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/paint-...ll-thread.html

So as it was said in the ls1tech forum that gm would fix it. Can you still have gm fix it these days?

I think you're well outside the window of GM fixing it. Take some pics, it's it just clear coat bubbling or the actual roof panel?

It looks like just the clear coat. There are already a few spots that appear to have popped and exposed either bad paint or primer.

That wouldn't be the roof bubbles from degassing. That's just failing clear coat. If it was bubbles from degassing, you would have lumps and bumps on the roof.

They are bubbles. I can push down on them with the tip of my finger. I have even popped one.

I will snap pics this weekend.

The majority of us have the same problem. It's like pimples on fbodies. For a long time I thought it was the Calif. heat that was doing it.

I had it too on my 2000 t top camaro. The dealer refused to do anything. I found a guy who glued black convertible material to the entire section to the body of the car. It looks fine and the problem is solved. It did not cost much either.

                            Re: Roof bubbles are everywhere..

                            hi,
i have a 2001 3.8V6 Camaro, with the color light pewter (23.000 miles).
And i am living in the Netherlands (Europe).

My car don't have this problem with the roof (yet).
and the paint of my is shining everywhere, no problems with clear coat.

Maybe it is the combination with glue, dark color paint, and the heat of the sun.
In Europe it is not so hot, and pewter is a light color.

Nothing to do with color. It's outgassing from chemicals, specifically the adhesive used to fix the roof panel to the body. Has nothing to do with paint, clear coat, wax, the alignment of the stars and moons, or mammary glands. My bright *** SOM WS6 had it, my NBM Camaro does not.
