  • Sponge or Hand Mit?

Just curious to see what you all use to wash your cars.. a sponge, hand mit or something else?

I use a hand mit that gets washed between uses. Unfortunately I am seeing swirls in my paint and not sure what to do..

My plans for the coming weekend are buying more detailing supplies, wash, claybar and wax the car. Does anyone have a full detail process that they think is the best??

Come one.. I want to hear about it!

I've always used good quality clean sponges to wash my car. You can buy the really cheap sponges or more expensive sponges; I opt for the more expensive better quality sponges. However, I might have to give the mit a try though. Good advice to use your used dirty mit to wash wheels and the underside of the car. The dirt particules trapped in the mit, sponge, or whatever can scratch the paint.

I use a mit and sometimes microfiber towels. Like said...dont use same stuff on paint that you use on wheels. I usually have a set for my paint, wheels, then another for exhaust tips/under body pannels (the spots that are painted, but get lots of road grime)

Do any of you used compressed air to dry off your cars? It is rather time consuming but occasionally I will use my air compressor and it does the job.

I use a chamois to dry my car.. I can't stand those waterspots on the firebird's hatch where the water collects. Waterspots are actually harmful to your paint so you want to use something to dry your car.

I never used sponges or mitts on the Camaro, and rarely did I have swirls on it. Always used water, warm water.

ive always just used a really soft cloth, but ive been meaning to upgrade to one of those microfiber mits.

if you have really light swirls a nice polish and wax job should get rid of them.

                      Re: Sponge or Hand Mit?

                      The new routine...

Two bucket wash (google if you don't know what that is)
Wash with car soap - using up the last of the Meguiar's I have left, then switching to DP or ONR
Mild clay bar - Clay Magic
                      Rinse - ONR
Polish/Seal - Meguiars #7 Show Car Glaze or Klasse
Wax - finishing off the Megiuar's Gold Class, then switching to Dodo Juice.

I used to use microfiber mitts, but am tired of the swirls they cause. Not enough nap for my tastes. Ordering some new sheepskin wash and Lake Country wash mitts soon. Also hopefully be getting a new PC to help speed up the detailing process.

Yeah, pressurized. The car wash I went to was cool, I never paid to use the manual wash, the water for the soap and rinse was set to 85 degrees, and their spotless was TRUE ionized water. Granted, the Camaro was silver, but I never had to dry it with anything other than one terry cloth towel, by dabbing it, not dragging it across the clear coat. Was always clean, even cleaned it in the middle of winter. Once a week, and almost never paid for it.

The Firebird on the other hand, I could care less about. The paint is fuct anyway from tree sap, bird ****, and whatever else thats on there thats been on there for years. The car needs a whole new paint job, so I don't spend the money getting the cleaning supplies and wax for it.

But yes, JUST WATER. Is it a hard concept to understand?

yup, because I too have similar car washes and it doesnt get that quality clean like a microfiber will. I dont see how you can get all that grime off with just water. I just dont see it happening. Well maybe unless your car is never driven. Sorry I find your claim not true. No need to get nasty

Soap and warm water do wonders. Cold water out of a hose wouldn't clean a nun. its why I don't use a garden hose and house water to clean my car, never will.
