Proof that you get what you paid for. This was my 1993 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight. The car was one of the "bad factory GM clear coat" cars, so I figured it's only worth $1,500 with the low miles.. I'll take it to Maaco. They repainted the car the same purple car and it looked good at first, but here is what it looked like after 6 months..

accually if you were to prep your car ur self for paint then bring it to maco it prob would be nice for a while

i had an 84 z-28 i had painted by maaco..it looked great for about a year, then started to dull and little rust spots started coming through. the guy even painted over my turn signals and tried to tell me they were already painted white ( the car was originally black) and the shop ended up closing down.

on the other hand theres a maaco in my area that paints show winning cars. guys i know with collector cars bring all their cars to this maaco. just depends on the shop you choose i guess.

you get what you pay for, end of story. Maaco can do cheap paint jobs, then can also do show winning paint jobs.

I had a Maaco paint job done on my 1991 Mercury Topaz.

This was a 99 dollar special. They tried to upsell me on prep work and taping off certain parts of the car but I kept on saying that it is a 99 dollar special and that is all I am paying.

It took them 3 days.

They painted the bumpers because I told them not to bother taping them off.

I must say I was amazing by the paint job. Now, I did it because I was selling the car and it was worth the 99 dollar investment. I have no idea how long it lasted.... hell.... it might have washed off in the first rain.... but it was 99 bucks!

People bash maaco paint jobs.... but as mentioned abpve... you get what you pay for.

If you're going to go with Maaco be sure to do the prep work yourself. They now have dupont and Sherwin Williams which are good paints. So be sure to go with either one of those.

I had Dupont used on my Civic and it never faded and it looked just as good as the rest. You can't even tell the difference.

Earl sheib used sherwin williams on my car for an extra $50 they said they used it but I think they lied. LOL So When I had mine painted black through the private painter, I bought all the painted though GM using my Dads 20%+ discount and made sure the guy used my paint as I would go up there and make sure they were using it and took pics with my phone, I think they would of shortcutted me if I would of left them alone becuase it took them instead of 2 weeks , 4 weeks bacuse I was there when they were spraying , and pointing out flaws. So 6 coats of paint and 6 coats of clear later it finally came out good esp. when they cut& buffed it out. The primer and sealant came out good when they did the black chalking basicaly 1-2 times that was it because I had 4 dents in it.

i have friends that own a body shop. as a matter of fact the owners father is an old school body and paint guy. he even worked at maaco back in the day and hes always saying you get what you pay for. with that being said he has no issue with maaco and would have his car painted there. the guy doing the spraying makes just as much difference as the paint itself...

When I re-painted my winter beater a couple of years ago I just used cans of spray paint from WalMart. It looked pretty good, and probably lasted about as long as a Maaco paintjob. It's getting a little faded now, and some of the rust spots I "fixed" are starting to show through. I'll be painting it again this fall once the bugs are all dead. It's good practice though, to learn how to do basic body work. And it's actually kind of fun, and rewarding when it's all done and actually looks nice.
