I smashed a baseball-sized hole in my door and took off the mirror.

I took it one place, and the guy said he could patch it & paint it, and he wouldn't need to do anything to the fender which wasn't damaged. $500

The other place said the door skin was made of something other than fiberglass, and it needed to be replaced. And he would need to blend in the new paint to the adjacent fender. $1750

Anybody have any idea whose jerking me around?

Just learned more than I ever need to know about fiber encapsulated plastic (SMC) in a popular mechanics article. Always thougth it was fiberglass too. Pretty exotic stuff, but seems easy enough to fix with the right compounds. First guy sounds like your man. Second sounds like he doesn't know how to work with SMC considering from what I read SMC can be patched, filled, and painted with the right materials.

Yeah, the second guy said we could do that, but the price would be $500, same as the door skin. Since my car's only got 40k, I thought I'd be better keeping my door.

Sometimes I think i'm just mentally challenged.

A nice used "new" door is better than a patched one in my book.
