  • Removing Tint Accident

I discovered that the tinted film I paid to have installed on the back glass of the Camaro was not cooling the car but rather heating the car up so I wanted to remove it. I bought a "heat gun" to heat up the film so I could use a razor blade to scrape it off. Well, let me tell you the film is a real horror to remove and I did not realize where I had put my hand with the gun while I scraped it off and I burned a hole in the back of the rear seat!!!!! It took about 1 second. Think of how you can burn up in that car if there is an accident and the seats get on fire !!!!!!!!!
Do not install that film if you EVER want to remove it because its on their for a lifetime. I live in hot and humid Florida and the car is cooler sitting in the sun now than when I had the film on the windows.

The bigger advantage of tint, and the intended purpose in the sun is to block the UV rays from fading and ruining your interior, not so much to prevent heat from getting in. That said, it does block heat from coming in, as can be illustrated by sticking your hand under your untinted windshield and comparing to the sun coming through a tinted side window, but in this same way, it keeps heat IN once it does get in. The net effect is a hotter car than an untinted car, but a better protected interior.

All that said, I have taken tint off that had been on for around 2 years without any issue. I just started a corner with a razor blade and pulled it off in one sheet. It wasn't bad tint and it wasn't falling off, but it also wasn't a rear window that had been in the Florida sun.

I always get a kick out of PalmHarbor's threads lol.

I've never had any trouble taking tint off...

WELL, I have a black camaro and the sun is hot 9 months of the year and that film would not come off...it took days. It was 81 in the shade today the 14th of February.

Its the same here in AZ, its getting into the 80's, the guy who redid my tint used amonia(I think ) in a spray bottle then put plastic over the tint and it came off in 1 piece.

I took mine off to replace it, it was some gawd awful cheap brand and took some decent time with a blade, it was unpleasant, but not difficult. Also, check my location ;) haha

If you had a shop put it on, I bet they would have removed it.

The difficulty was the big rear hatch window. I tried amonia but it had no affect. Were I to put ammonia on and try to cover it then with plastic, I would have to remove the hatch. Putting the plastic on the outside of the window it would have no affect as it would not come in contact with the ammonia. Other than "privacy" the film has no value.

I don't really agree with that, my camaro had no tint at all, and I would say that by far when cruising on the highway with windows up the tint might not keep it cool on its own, but it does help when trying to keep the car cool with the AC on or whatever. t-top shades also made a huge change on really hot days.
