  • Getting my 2.8 Bird painted

Using the tax return to paint the bird. Same color, black. I don't think any color looks good on a 3rd gen other than black.

I'm taking it to One Day Paint and Body. I've done my research on this and compare to Maaco and Earl Sheib this is the best one.

They only use Sherwin Williams Paint and they warranty it if cracks, fade, or wrinkle for up to 5 years.

They have a special going on that's going to end this month. A $659 paint job is discounted for $489. So I'm probably going to take it in this Saturday or next week.

Are you going to prep yourself? At that price, they probably do little to no prep, so I would in the very least go over the car with 800 or 1000 grit wet sand and sand out any imperfections you don't want to see in the new paint.

i'm about to paint my roommates 84 TA, black.. gonna do the black and gold theme, but i happen to think they look really good in white. definitely find out what prep they do... when i paint cars, i sand it dull with 400, some people use 600, and some people even 800 any courser than 400\320 and you will see scratches. and i use red scotch bright for hard to reach places.

According to their website they do all the prepping themselves and they do sand it down. They also work on minor dings and chips without extra charge.

I'm going over there tomorrow to show them the Bird and to discuss how they are going to prep it.

        -------------------------

Black with gold trim would look good on a TA. That brings back a lot of memories for me. Because I remember how my dad took me to a Pontiac dealership in the early 80's and he wanted to buy that black with gold trim TA. I remember jumping in there and thinking it was KITT.

Instead we drove home in a used Mitsubishi Saporo, because my dad didn't have enough credit to buy that TA. LOL

Take a look at their work. The only way to see how good a shop is is to see the work yourself. They probably even have cars on site they can show you. Look for painted over chips, bad orange peel, or any unevenness. At that price, I would probably do the prep work myself anyway as prep is really what makes a good paint job.

Oh yeah, absolutely, that's what I was planning on doing. Taking a closer look at some of their finish product, especially the stage 3 paint job.

If I see any imperfection I will do just that - do some of the prep work.

I'll take some before and after pics to show you guys and definately will tell you my feedback.

Yes, stage 3 or Plus 3 as they call it. It's their best one. Here's the site: http://www.onedaypaint.com

I spoke to the manager today to let him know that I'm coming over and he told me that his shop opened up 3 weeks ago. He wants to do a good job on my bird so I could spread the word about his shop. So will see this afternoon.

                    Yes. Definately.

Went down there today and showed him the condition of the Bird and schedule to have it dropped off this Saturday.

He has 2 cars there that were already done and they both got Plus 3 paint work.

The Taurus got painted white and it looked like a 7 out of 10. I looked really close and found tears of paint on the hood and some on the side panels, but you have to look really close to see it.

The Civic got metalic blue and it is an 8 1/2 out of 10. Didn't see any tears on this one. Paint looked really good.

I went to the back of their shop and saw a finished Lexus and a Baja Bug. Both of them just came out of the oven and they both looked good. I also got to see how they prep them and tape them. It looks good.

There's 2 men working there. I'm just hoping that the guy who looked to be in his 50's work on my Bird. He looks more experience with the prepping and the Paint gun.
                    --------------------------------------

Anyway, when I got home I took TheGr8Schlotzky advice and started wetsanding it with 800. Tomorrow I'm going to do the 1000 and start the taping process too. I guess it's better to be thorough.

I'm not expecting a perfect paint job, but I would love to have it close to it.

Re: Getting my 2.8 Bird painted

Got the Bird back today from 1 Day and the black Sherwin Williams paint looks really good.

There are some minut bubbles on the hood and spoiler and some imperfection, but other than I'm very please. I do wish I used a 300 and 400 sandpaper instead to get the old paint down and to smooth out the imperfections.

Well I didn't get my expections up on a 500 bucks paint job. I do give this an 8 out of 10.

Tomorrow the Bird is going to have its old tint removed and putting in new ones. I'm having a couple of flaming bird decals made. Then I'm going work on the brakes this Saturday and replace the Fuel Filter and Coolant on Sunday. That should wrap it up for the 2.8 and then I'm going to work on my 3.8.

The Bird right now is full of dust and the tech guy asked me to wait for a week before washing it down. Once I finish washing it down I'll take some pics and post it.

I'll post pics next week. It's dirty right now and I'm currently working on the brakes. I finish the tint and decal though.
