Are our stock front signal lamp covers supposed to be frosted?
Are our stock front signal lamp covers supposed to be frosted?
I'm talking about the front plastic ones with the yellow bulbs behind them. Signal lamps, daytime running lights, parking lights, whatever the heck you call them. Not the fog lights. I ask because I've been trying like a mofo to polish mine and clear them up but with no luck. They're 14 years old so I can't tell if they're supposed to be foggy or if I'm just bad with sandpaper (I used 400 > 600 > 1000 > 3000 grit, wet sanding).
Re: Are our stock front signal lamp covers supposed to be frosted?
They and the fog light covers have like little bubbles and scratches/nicks in the plastic, below anything I've sanded off... They look like they're from rocks/debris hitting the plastic but I've sanded down a few of them and those nicks never disappear. I'm gonna finish with the 3000 grit then wax them and post back if I have any overall success.
I'm too cheap to just buy new ones or glass replacements :D
Fun semi-relevant fact: my passenger side front signal lamp cover is partially melted completely through where the side of the bulb is closest to the plastic. It's a crack but it was melted there, not smashed. I have no idea how/why that happens o_o
Re: Are our stock front signal lamp covers supposed to be frosted?
You need an acrylic compound, by sanding it you are ultimately making it worse. If you happen to clear it up properly, the surface will once again oxidize and this time much worse. Look into proper head light restoration and you will learn that any plastic housing u use typical compound or sandpaper on is actually destroying the lens. You need the acrylic stuff to safely remove oxidation without ruining the lens
Re: Are our stock front signal lamp covers supposed to be frosted?
Oops. Well I waxed them with Meguiars Gold Class carnauba wax after sanding and they look a little better than before. If the wax doesn't hold up very long I'll redo them properly.
Re: Are our stock front signal lamp covers supposed to be frosted?
Trust me mine drive me nuts! But mine are melted by the sockets. You can buy a new pair for around $30. Just remember if your gonna do it properly get an oxidation cleaner that is abrasive-free. If it says to "rub in" or "apply pressure" it's not what you want. The right stuff should literally glide over the lens and wipe away the oxidation. Be aware the inside could also be dirty so you might have to remove the lens. Hope this helps
