It does act as a shroud you're right, but I think with the hood closed it should be fine. The main thing I think is that you have air still flowing over the radiator. I'll find out when I take it off if I heat up.
I'm curious to know what the basic "stripper" v8s weigh.
My brother's weighs 3275 without him in it. His is a 95 Camaro with a 93 Ta drivetrain. The car is a hardtop, no ac, manual windows car. Funny how my 3.8 only weighs 40 less.
Ahh got it...I thought that was part of the frame though? Should you really be cutting that? Or is that going to buckle when you get into a collision and write the car off?
Don't know where I left off yesterday but I am sitting at 3lbs total in weight savings (roughly as the fish scale isn't the best when things are this light)
Got in a few cuts today, and I actually had quite a bit of fun doing it.
Note to self...wear gloves next time as I have a ton of fiberglass in my hands. Didn't exactly think about that when I hole sawed the door and picked up the dust afterwards :spank:.
Progress pics:
FYI, the cuts in that regulator make a HUGE difference in how the window rolls up. It actually seems effortless to roll the window up which I think is great.
I am actually considering cutting an access panel to expose the bottom half of the regular so that I can cut out 3 more holes from it. I'm amazed at how much better with window feels.
The fiberglass weighs practically nothing, I'm a little upset about that...BUT, the door did feel like it closed nicer afterwards, so can't complain there. Hell the tone of the door closing even changed a tad, it's less of a clunk now.
I'm still laughing because I heard my neighbours complaining to. I swear anytime I work on the car I'm making too much noise ("ohhh we can hear the compressor you use from inside" Really? It's no louder than a lawnmower and on for less..."ohh your car is on jackstands and we have little kids, it's too dangerous"... really? it's on stands, chocked and blocked off...and I'm under it...what does that tell you?..."ohhh your car leaks oil and it's going to make us all sick because it gets washed into the sewers"...again really? so does 90% of everyone elses car in this Province...if you're not sick yet, don't worry about it.)
anyways, I'll stop ranting...I laughed when I heard "and now he's f*cking drilling holes in the doors!!"
A little bit more progress has been made, I think I am at 4.5lbs and pretty pumped, as I can still think of quite a bit more to come out.
As a side note, I won't be cutting holes in the next door other than in the window mechanisms. The fiberglass weighs next to nothing, and it was a B!tch to clean out of the car, and I would rather not breathe the stuff in and itch at myself for the next 3 days for the little gain.
Remember that bracket that holds the throttle cables? Definetly doesn't need all that weight lol
2000 Firebird- Intake, Pacesetters, !cat, full 2.5 to flowcrapster, 1.9 rockers, LS6 springs and Intense modded retainers, WS6 speedlines, T/A bumpers and hatch, 5 spd swapped, SOON TO BE nitrous'd and cammed.
Just upped the ante to almost 7lbs! The sway bar brackets are worth 1.5 lbs a piece with bolts (I only took one off for the time being as my trans cooler is kinda being held in place by the other one until next week.
Ditched the big metal bar that goes behind the alt, that was good for a lb.
Made a few more cuts. I'll post some pics later, and I have a few questions
Wait, Is that a V6 or V8? 1990 Chevrolet C-K 1500 series 4.3L .. 5spd
