So I closed off at 7lbs today...I made a mistake, I was only at 3lbs before, not 4.5
In any event, this is all off the front end of the car and that makes me happy regardless
I know I could probably take a little more off these brackets, but I don't really know where to stop, and I am concerned about going a tad too far. So I am trying to error on the side of leaving a tad too much because I can always go back and trim it down later
I'm not counting the weight of the front sway bar that I removed because it was already off about 3 weeks or so before I decided to start this "project", so I won't cheat.
The brackets are surprisingly worth a pretty penny at 1.5 each with bolts.
so, first question...what is this and do I need it? (ignore the rust, that's Canadian winters for you)
2nd question, what happens if I unplug the abs sensors on the front hubs? (I don't have abs anyways) but is that info used in other parts of the computer system that it might throw something off?
And here is a few pics of the progress for today
This bracket on the back of the alternator = gone
Power steering bracket has been swissed
Here is the hood latch. I wanted to get the hinges for the hood out of the way this weekend, but that almost ended up in a disaster. Note to self for the future. Undoing the hinge from the hood, thinking that the two gas struts and opposite hinge will hold the hood steady....not a good idea. The hood snapped towards the driver side as soon as I tried to un latch the passenger side bracket. I ended up grabbing it and having to use my cell phone to call for someone to give me a hand and get it back in place lol. It was like it was spring loaded. So ya, take note, to get the hood off, undo the hood struts first, then undo the hood hinges with TWO people and carefully remove.
Where's Pace? She was asking about my electrical skills earlier...this is one of my previous messes of wires I stumbled across today and cleaned up.
My biggest problem is I have no patience when I get new stuff and want to throw it in the car...especially if I get it during the winter months. All these wires were from the Alpine Bluetooth that I have in the car. I've just removed everything for the time being and cleaned up the wiring mess.
And everything I cut out of that jumble of a mess.
you know what...Pace, I might take you up on, it's probably better for me to find a spare harness. lol
but what happens when I take those speakers out ;)
no more sterio so go ahead and take the head unit out as well. if your going this rout you might as well remove the carpet and the back seats and all the plastic in the interior. also why not just pin the hood on and get rid of all the latches and the hood struts.
no, speakers will only come out when I got to the track...this car is still DD in the summer time. That is the whole point to not cutting/touching anything such as the bumper supports, air bags, door bars, or anything to do with safety. As for the carpet I have already removed the sound deadner under it. Next year I plan on getting the lightweight carpet (one that weighs like 5-10lbs) lexan rear glass, and two racing seats. Dane's (warshrike) project got me looking at Corbeau's a little more. And I have been eyeing the classic non reclining seats from them. They seem to weigh 15-18lbs a piece, and actually look like they would match the leather that is already in the car. I have to do a bunch more research on those seats though...next year is a ways away, I'll take my time with that one.
The way I see it at the moment, I can see a prediction for about 24lbs I can scrape out. The other 76lbs is going to be challenging and going to require real creativity.

i see. im planning on getting the fx1 seats for my camaro, if you want a lighter seat kirkey make some that around 10 pounds and you can get them used for around $100 at racingjunk.com. there are still alot more places you can go to get your car lighter ill keep on watching to see what you can do.
Feel free to give me ideas, I don't want to sound like an a** when I've shot down a few, just want people to know that the theme is maintaining safety, and that the car is still DD so the radio isn't going anywhere.
Aside from that, I've already deleted awhile ago, the ac, egr, spare tire/jack, abs, front sway bar and that sorta thing. I have the lightweight k frame, aluminum driveshaft, qa1 suspension, aluminum phr etc.
I was looking at kirkeys, but it is my understanding it is not "safe" to install them without actually welding them to a roll cage for support. Not sure if it is the same with the corbeau seats, this was something I was going to look into with research
You gotta remember that I do drive other peopke as well, and their safety is even more so a priority than my own
U should roll with 3 lugnuts. Jk. But for the track you could remove the spoiler it is weight in the right place tho. Center caps on the wheel if u have them. Could remove a tailight and head lights at the track

that's for the FIA rating for wheel to wheel road racing. for daily and drag kirkeys and corbeau seats are still much safer than your stock seats. if your wanting an FIA rated seat look to spend a pretty penny.
for more weight savings how about tubular a arms i know there expensive but still its a good place to save. lt1 style brakes and 3rd gen rear brakes you canalways get some hawk pads to compensate for the smaller rotors.
manual steering rack?
if abs is disabled go ahead and take everything out and and bypass the abs block and take that out too.

Already have lower A arms from PA racing as well as there K frame. I'll probably grab the uppers with new ball joints next year. (sorry, I didn't really say what I had done already from the get go lol)
ABS is disabled and the unit has been pulled previously and replaced with a proportioning valve (which seized in its current postion:mad:)
The wiring is still all there, but I am not ready to tackle the wiring harness just yet.
I'll retain the power steering for now, atleast until I can get this thing down much lighter.
front sway bar, egr, spare tire/jack, AC, insulation under the carpet, most of the insulation against the firewall, most heat shields, miscellaneous screws, and the motor lift mounts have all been removed.
The rear and passenger seats stay in the car except for track days.
This is why pulling 100lbs out might prove a little challenging lol, well unless I cheat and buy lighter parts
So anyone know what that box I have pictured was/is?
Where is it located. A picture of the area might help, see whats near it.
