  • side trim delete

so i decided to take off the side trim from the front fenders doors and the rear quarter panel. i saw a write up about this on the ftv6 forum and decided it looked better that having faded trim and also 2 of my pieces were missing so i said heck with it take em off.

caution: i am not responsible if any thing that happens to your ride. or your self in this process.

at the end if you go through with it you may find out if your car was repainted.

this is how i did it:

    things you need:
    1. paper towels or a rag
    2.dental floss or fishing wire
    3. 1 can of adhesive remover(should be available at any auto parts store) or rubbing alcohol
    4. some sort of scraper that can get under the adhesive left over.(i used a sticker removal tool )
    5. 30-45 minutes to do this

step 1: get the dental floss or fishing wire and get it behind the trim and start to move the string back towards you while pulling it side to side (repeat this this for all the exterior trim you will remove)

step 2: once done with all pieces of trim. you will have residue left over usually its grey and is sticky. you can use your finger to remove it and remove the left over adhesive later with the adhesive remover. but i used this method, get the adhesive remover and follow the instructions on the back of how to apply. i had a spray on application.i sprayed until it was soaked wit the liquid

step 3: get the sticker removal tool or scraper what ever you get and start to slowly scrape the adhesive of slowly(be careful you can scratch your paint this way, i did like 3 or 4 times but then got the hang of it) repeat this for all left over adhesive

step 4: there might be left over outlines of the trim . the cause to dirt and grime gathering there over the years.clean the surface once the adhesive is completely removed. get some paper towels and clean with water and soap. or give your car a full wash. your choice.

step 5: enjoy the new look!

    these were my results

You don't need adhesive remover and a scrapper! OMG

Isopropyl alcohol from a drug store removes 3M adhesive easily - NO chance of scrapping the paint. Have used this process to remove trim, emblems, etc many times.

Also use high strength nylon fishing line - or it may break while removing the trim/emblem.

And - "an hour or two"? I remove my side trim years ago - removed and cleaned (IPA) - 20 minutes.

i tried and i got inpatient with it so i was like, im getting the scraper and the adhesive remover and soaking it . that's why i did it that way. for residue left from stickers it works but with this thick stuff i got impatient so i got the scraper and the adhesive remover. and it was quicker for me.

and yea an hour or 2 was way too mutch sorry about that it took me 45 minutes

Soaking it in WD40 will do it too.

I like my trims though, but I've used WD40 to remove emblems and vinyl stickers and such.

X2 to what Robert said. Easiest way to do it is Isopropyl alcohol, I used that and a hair dryer for on my Envoy awhile back and it took the moulding off super quick.

heatgun + your fingers = done in about 5 minutes per side. You can roll the glue up with your fingers to. I love the way the car looks without the trim.
