• cracked dash pad, can I fix it or just leave it out?

Well this dash pad in my car is cracked beyond what I wish it was. It started with one small, minor crack, and now has made a Y shape and started going towards the windsheild. I got so tired of it I bought a dash cover to hide it's ugliness.

Now, when I drive and hit bumps of any sort, it makes noises of rattiling and being broken. My question is, can I take that stupid thing out and either fix it (glue cracks together, use dynamat or equivlent to give it structure) and fix it that way? OR can I just simply take it out and use my dash cover to cover things up? I am open to any ideas or suggestions.

I see these go used on ebay for $50-70 which isn't bad, but I can't see the plastic anyways, so it makes it a sort of waste of money. I bought the dash cover a few months back and ever since I havne't taken it off. I'd just like to band-aid it enough to get by without it making noise or replacing it if possible.

Please let me know what my options are.

Thanks,
Chris

can't you just buy a new dash? I have a dash cover on my car too (it was there when I bought it), but it's nice to know that the dash underneath isn't all cracked and ugly.

Well yes, I could buy a new dash pad. I dunno what the dealer part # is for it and I really don't want to spend what a dealer wants for it.

I also don't know why I'd care about that dash piece if I have it covered up. I do not want to buy a new one if there is another way to fix my broken one. It is just a cheap piece of plastic that gets sun damaged.

If I ever sold the car, I'd probably put a new one on, or I'd simply say it cracked and I fixed it, and it is good as new. Just as long as you keep it covered your ok.

Thanks for the idea anyways,
Chris

I'm guessing you could just put some sort of glue inside the crack and seal it that way, but over time the glue would come loose from the edges of the dashpad and probably flake out. I'll do a search on e-bay for what you're looking for. If I find anything i'll be sure to post it asap

Since we are on the subject of dash boards... I have a 91 Camaro as you can see below, and my dash is badly cracked. Where can I find a new one? They don't have them at Autozone or Kragen, and Pick & Pull Camaro's are completely picked over.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Story time kids...

I broke the little piece that holds the light in the glove compartment... no biggy, thought I'd take it in, get some warranty repair done, and they'll just change the part.. turns out they have to replace the whole dash! No biggy still, so then the guy tells me it costs $600! the dash is a ***** to replace with a dealer, he replaced it under warranty anyways because he was really nice and I knew him, but expect to pay $600 for a dash for a 2002 firebird.

Take it out, and try this stuff PC-7. There is a cap on both ends, wear gloves. Take a screw and mix the stuff from both sides together untill it is a grey color all throughout. Then, taking your time, use the screw to completly fill the crack with the PC-7. Now let it sit for atleast 8 hours and its done. The seal will be hard as a ROCK. Just put some black paint on the crack because it does show grey where the crack is because of the pc-7. You can find it at Home depot etc.
