What can be polished?

I saw on project trans am and also on here I think, that someone polished their calipers instead of painting them. Anyways, I would like to do this to some of my engine. Anyone know some things that can be polished without hurting anything

Water Pump, alternator casing, metal lines such as brake likes and AC lines, aluminum brackets, etc.
