Does anyone know where I can purchase the stuff to re-clearcoat my alloy rims myself? The clearcoat is wearing off and I'd hate to send them off somewhere to have it done..
Thanks! ;)

You can either go spraycan, which is the cheapest and doesn't allow too much shine to show through but still looks good, OR buy a pint of clearcoat from an auto body supply store and spray it on which will give maximum clarity (you'll need an air compressor, spraygun, etc.)

by the time you spend enough to buy equipment worth having, its going to be much more expensive than to just pay to have it done. a spray can isnt a bad alterantive if youre not looking for a perfect job and you have some confidence in yourself using paint.

I used the stuff from a spraycan once, and it came out kinda nice. It was sprayed on painted salad's and it looked really good. It brought a shine to them when they had alot of dull spots from years of wear.
I wouldn't recomment the spraycan for a chrome or polished finish though. That kind of finish you want to spray with a professional paintgun.

My old rims (5-star silver firebird wheels) looked like crap so I sanded them down with 2000 grit sandpaper untill all the clearcoat was gone, then just used a can of duplicolor clearcoat (from walmart) and gave them a few coats. I had them on my car this way for over a year before buying some chrome rims and they still looked great.

hehe.. my dad has an air compressor and spray gun and all that good stuff so im in luck.. my clearcoat is just like wearing off from age i guess, ive taken care of the wheels (waxing, etc) but i just cant prevent normal wear and tear.. I'm just looking to put the shine back to them, they're awfully dull now and I dont want to fork out the money for a new set of wheels.. plus its hard to find new factory firebird 5-star alloys nowadays.. thanks for the help though guys.. :D

Sand them down with 1500 or (preferrably) 2000 grit to remove most of the old crap, then re-clearcoat with your dad's spraygun. They will come out awesome!!
