  • Ahhhhhh No!

    I just noticed this today:
As i was walking back to my car in the parking lot i noticed spiderweb cracks in the paint (it looks like) on the drivers side of my rear bumper. I never noticed it before so it must of happend recently... not sure what caused it... i, unfortunately, have not washed my car in a while (over a month :( ) because of all the damn rain (although its getting washed next week regardless  ). At any rate i was wondering what i could do to get rid of them. All suggestions are welcome.

yup i have spider cracking on both my front and back bumper. there is no way to stop it unless you get it re painted. if you want to prolong it then try not to move or flex the bumper as much when washing or drying it. the one on my back bumper grew about 3 inches in length in about 2-3 months. i hate it and pisses me off everytime i look at it.

This sucks.... i was hoping to spend that money on more productive things than paint... although maybe i could get them to do a racing stripe or something while they're at it....

I work at a body shop. This is what I suggest:

              1. Take the bumper off, its not too hard.
              2. Go to a body shop supply store and buy a 3M RED scuff pad and 320 grit sand paper
              3. by hand, using the 320 grit paper, scuff the cracking areas lightly until they are gone, but dont press to hard.
              4. Then scuff the entire bumper with the red scuff pad. ALL OF THE BUMPER until it is dull. Any shininess and the new paint will not stick and eventually peels off.
              5. Take it to a body shop and have them just shoot it with paint and clear coat

It shouldt be more than uhh, maybe $200. But, you saved 1.5 hours taking the bumper off and another .5 by scuffing it yourself. That saves you about $160 depending on the labor rates of the particular shop.

A friend of mine has a 94 maro, he had it repainted and someone bumped his bumper in traffic, and that caused it to spider crack terribly..
Maybe someone bumped your car ?

 I'm sorry to hear about this my friend. I definitely know how you feel. I to have a spider web crackage (crack, cracking w/e, crackage sounds funny/better lol) on my front clip. I know how it is, since we live in the same city with all this rain, fog & hail during this season. I also have a feeling that some one might of bumped into you gently which might of caused it to crack. Because usually this paint problem happens over time not in what a couple of hours? I need to repaint my front and rear but im broke :( . I think your paint will cost less than mine being its red and not "polo green metallic", so dont take that for granted ( not that im saying you were going to or anything). Anyways, yeaaa goodluck on the repaint. Hope this made sense and you didnt take anything the wrong way, i respect you as a person. No im not gay if youre wondering.. You Newb! :D

P.S. Don't the San Jose Mountains look beautiful in the morning?

                        ^ LOL.... thanks :D

Its quite possible that someone had bumped into me... i thought of that myself. Although there is no sign of a collision other than the spiderwebbing, which is actually on the horizontal plane (or is it plain?). Either way this is a big pita... and for the moment i think i'm going to hold off on repainting it for a little while longer. Once the permanent summer sunshine comes out i'm going to get some tonneau covers and those will need painting too, figure i might as well get them done with the rear bumper.

P.S. and yes they do look beautiful
