Painting Stock Rims

I have a black firebird, I was wondering if anybody has painted their rims... what kind of paint did you do and what kind of prep work is involved.

I painted my SS wheels..

prep: Each wheels was degresed and dried, I had a polished lip on mine, stripped the clear off and buffed it up real good, also ran some 600 grit sandpaper over the entire wheel to smooth it all out.

Primer: Automotive primer, I used gray, but I think i should have used black... it doesnt make a difference, just depends on how many coats you want and what color you will be painting hte wheels.. I went with 3 coats of primer i think.. then sanded with some 800.

Paint: I got some duplicolor Universal Metallic Black, found it also at a paint supplier, but i belive Autozone also carries it too. 4 coats, then sanded with 1000 grit then wetsand 1200.

Clear: 4 coats of Clear, same brand as color. i didnt sand or anything after the clear. Mainly because I didnt want to have to try and buff the wheel out again cause it wouldbe hard to get into the corners and stuff..

I used my kitchen oven to bake the paint a bit between color coats to help it dry and harden it up a bit.

Overall it came out well, the wheels were shiny and they held up well to the brake dust and cleanings... also didnt scratch or chip easily at all...

Thanks for the info, sounds like I will need to set a couple days aside to let all the paint dry... How long did it take you?
