help polishing brushed stainless steal exhuast tips
help polishing brushed stainless steal exhuast tips
just like the subject says. The exhaust tips that came with my dynomax cat back are stainless steal with a brushed finish, I want to polish these suckers up. I'm thinking I'll wet sand them first with some 320 grit. I'm wondering how a wire brush wheel would work though, it did well on my brake calipers, but those are aluminum. Any advice guys? Oh, and I dont have a dremel, so no dremel attachments
yeah, never dull works well at taking oxidation off I find, but these aren't oxidized, they have grain to them since they are brushed and I need to make them smooth. I guess I'll start with the wet sanding and then try the wire wheel brush, then move to polish. thanks guy
What I would do is first wet sand around 1200 grit to see how deep the brush effect is. If it is deeper try a 800 grit, then finish again with 1200 grit. If you are going to buff them by hand bring them to 2000 grit. If you have a bench grinder with the cotton wheel use some jeweler's rouge and the process is a lot easier, but be careful when using the bg because pieces that you are working will want to get away from you too. Also the wire wheel it tends to leave pits if it is to coarse.
I have some pics at the below after sanding and buffing the brake lines and the homemade pcm cover. I have a feeling im leaving something out, but I'll fix it if I find out what I left out
Oooh nice PCM cover. i just removed mine on sunday to get to the grommit to go thru the firewall and the plastic is cracked on top (i didnt do it) and one bolt is holding it in only cause the other one decided to snap off while i was unscrewing it. lol

thanks guys, I tested the wet sanding on the underside of a tip and found it too abrasive. so I figured the wire wheel would be worse and went striaght to buffing compound and a synthetic bugging pad on a buffer. Once I found the right abrasiveness compound ( had 4 different ones sitting around) it went smooth as heck. The only hard part was that the tips were on the car so it made it hard to get the big buffing pad around the dang things. I only polished the side facing out on the dual dual tips. Look great with my nicely polished crome wheels. I'm happy

I used some type of sand paper my dad has. Its used for polishing metal, the only thing i can describe it as a screen. This is to get the haze off of it. Then I buffed it using a dremel with a cotton wheel and some tripoli rouge (the green one). If you don't wanna sand it you can go to a harder rouge, and I miss a spot in the pic. Thanks.
