  • Cluster Swap.. YES I searched!

Here we go again- I have searched and read a hundred posts about this, and I do not have the answers I need, just lots of "I think's" and "i've read..."

I have a 2000 Camaro... I also have a 2000 Z28 cluster. (not installed) If the tach is wrong, how do I fix it? Also, is there a way to set the odometer to what is correct, or am I stuck with what the Z28 cluster already had on it? Thanks a lot in advance.....

The tach will be off. You can order filters online to fix that problem. A popular one is dakota digital tach recalibrator. SGI-8 I believe is the universal one. Your speedo should still be accurate.

About the odometer, you can either switch yours with it,, or attempt to change it. The odometers are real sensitive..and they can't just be changed by an everyday person. If the odometer isn't off by a whole lot, I would say just leave it, and document somewhere the miles you had before. That way you can just add them up and still know the true mileage, even though it won't be shown.

Odometer can be switched by anybody actually....I did it..took less than 5 minutes. The tach will be off....the SGI-8 will need to be setup for a 1-5V tach signal like the LS1....make sure you tell DD that if you order it.

Cool, thanks. How do you switch the odometer?

        Thanks again for the replies-

I believe you can remove the whole unit..Just look behind the cluster, and I think it might be screwed in. I don't know how the 98+ clusters are configured.

I'm having a hard time getting the cluster apart- What's the best way to access the odometer, remove the face and go in that way or take off the circuit board on the back? I'm afraid to poke or pry too hard in fear of breaking something. Thanks again.

Definetly go through the back of it.

What cluster do you have in your car right now? Have you taken your V6 cluster out yet?

I have the stock cluster in it right now. I wanted to get used to taking them apart, so that after I get my overlay for my Z28, I can pull out my old one, switch needed components, and put the new one in without having my car down long.

I am having a hard time getting the circuit board off. I removed the two torx screws but I'm not sure what else is holding it. Thanks for the help.

You do need to pull it a little bit to get out. On the back side of the cluster there is that connection port where all the wiring harnesses together. It does hold on a little bit still even with the screws removed. So you will have to use some force just to pull the two connections apart (like a printer connection on the computer, with the screws out, they still hold in place some). I think I'd like to do this at some point, the Nu-image flame gauges are awesome but only available for z28 clusters. Let us know how the swap goes. How much does the tach correction thingy cost?

Thanks everybody. I'll dig into it as soon as I get my gauge face. I'll try to do a quick write-up on what's involved so maybe we can end a lot of the questions on this subject.

Ok, I have my overlay. I've got the overlay installed without problem, but now I am wondering about the odometer. I got the circuit board off, and it looks like the "module" for the odometer is the square-sized board that is raised on the main board. It doesnt look like this can be removed (not without a lot of effort). Anyone know how they reset an odometer at the dealership? ;)

Also, I've read of a certian resistor that can be swapped from the V-6 cluster to the V-8 one, to maintain proper tach operation. (trying to avoid spending $80) Anyone know which one it is?

Thanks. I'm in no hurry to get this project done, although I am excited because it will look wicked cool. :D

once you get to the odometer chip/lcd, you just unplug it from the harness and take it out. same thing for the other cluster and put it back in.
