Gonna attempt something on the rear :) Need suggestions

In the next couple of days I plan on attempting something on the back of my car. The rear CAMARO letters... I want to take that piece of the car off, and cut the letters out. Then, mount a piece of blueish (since my car is done in blue) plexi-glass behind the letters. Then behind the plexi-glass, put a blue neon light. That way during the day the letters would still be blue from the plexi-glass (i have blue decals on them now), and at night I could flip the neon on and make the letters glow.
What do ya'll think? What would be the easiest and best way, and tool to use, to cut out the letters? Has anyone ever done this? Just give me any feedback I might need to know before doing this. How should I mount the plexi-glass to the back of the piece once it's cut out? I was thinking epoxy. Any suggestions welcomed!

I HAVE seen it on the 'net done before, and it looked quite good (was in red). I wouldn't mess with the red (brakes ... but I'm a fan of blue anyway, especailly on my white).
Sounds like you've got a good plan. Good luck with it. Have you searched for someone who's done it before? I know I saw it somewhere ...

So its gonna look like those honda eblems on the back that are lighted pretty much just with camaro and neons.. uhm.. I don't think I'd do that, but its your car. Depending on how thick the piece is it might look weird. Since you'll have that much of a space in the back from where you cut it (I hope that made sense, because I lost even myself there for a second)

Well, yeah, I did see a picture of it before also, although I think it was blue on a black car... not sure, may have been the same one you saw, it was so long ago I forget. I just dunno what the hell to search for to find it in a past thread?? Oh well I'll give that a shot. My main thing is what kinda tool would be the best to cut out the letters to get the smoothest finish, and not crack any paint on the remaining parts.

Sounds cool but reflective 3M cutouts are easier and require less hassle.

It'd be like on some Pontiac's (forgot which) where the rear letters are illuminated red. I didn't think about how thick the piece is... I guess before I buy any neon tubes I outta take it off and find out.

I took the piece partially off, and it's thin enough to do it.

Yeah, but this will look cooler :D I'm not worried about hassle, I like doing stuff to my car, so it's not really "hassle" to me. Thing about reflective ones are that in order for reflective stuff to illuminate, you have to be a certain distance away and a source of light has to be shining directly onto them. With this, no matter what or where you are, and how much light there is around, it'll still glow.

I think it will look awesome. I would make letters out of plexiglass that fit into the camaro and then cut it out and glue the letters in. Then glue a mirror behind them and put the neon below it where it would glow better.

If you are going to do this, the biggest thing you need to worry about is the paint chipping while you are cutting. I would advise using a dremel with a very fine cutter or maybe even a fine grinding tip. If you get a chip, it will continue to grow. Tape down around the edges that you dont want to cut to help prevent any chips. Just take your time and dont rush anything.

Cops here don't really care about the lighting stuff. My underbody neons are already mounted illegally (you're not supposed to be able to see the bulb, and mine's very visible), and I've never had any problems. I've seen people driving around with their freakin strobes on and no one cares. I'm not worried about the legal part :D

that's illegal as well. those neons can only be used when the car is not operated on a public road.
