Is it possible to do a self strip on my firebird. I don't have 700 dollars to throw away for it to be stripped. Could I use a palm sander with some high grit paper, then prime it when I'm done.

I don't see why you would need to strip something completely down just to repaint it, as long as it is scuffed you can paint it. If there is any bare metal showing or you want to cover up some spots you fixed with bodyfiller you want to cover them with primer. However, priming the whole car is not nescessary. How you scuff it before it's painted is up to you. Our bodyshop might just use 1200-400 grit to sand it down depending on the application. I've even used regular scotch brite to scruff down a car.
