  • Hurst Knob mess-up

OK, I bought my beauty about 3 weeks ago(1999 Sport Metallic Gold 3.8L Camaro) and when I bought it something was wrong, something I thought I could fix the day I brought it home...

The shifter knob is upsided down. I mean completely upside down. It is a Hurst white cue-ball like knob with the 1,2,3,4,5,R on it. The shifter is Hurst too.

The problem I am faced with now is the fact that I can't take it off and fix it. When I tried to my knuckle-busters to get it off, all it did was cause the knob to flake on the bottom. The fact that the knob is upside down doesn't bother me, I just want my car to be perfect.

I am pretty new to cars and all. Any help would be appreciated a lot.

    Thanks, Seth

it was probably put on with loc-tite then....

i pulled my Hurst t-handle off my hurst shifter once, and it was the worst thing i ever did. it never went back on right, and the threads stripped over time.

id just leave it. nail polish remover takes off Loc-tite if you can get some in there somehow. only way i can think of is to slit a cup down the side and fit it around the handle, and tape it up REAL good, and fill it with nail polish remover, but that would be pretty dangerous, expensive, and risky.

youd be better off just trying your best to turn that little bastard as hard as you can, and if something happens, oh well, you gotta get a new one. they arent too much money.

Well, My dad and I were thinking...since the material of the knob is kinda flaky...could we saw the thing off? OK,I know this seams drastic, but..could it work?

nope, its a plastic knob, but there is a metal sleeve in it, and you couldnt saw through that w/o messin up the threads on the handle.

id say twist the crap out of it...

At the end of Part Three, we changed the valvetrain of the 3.8-liter V6 in the Tom Henry RS. We installed new, Yella Terra "Ultralite" 1.8:1, aluminum roller rocker arms, Katech valve springs and Katech titanium retainers on our 3800 Series II V6.
Ultralites are nearly 25% lighter than the stock 1.6 rockers and 8% lighter than the SLP aluminum...
