Will pretty much any manual shifter boot work on an A4 with modification, or will I need one custom made for my application? Thanks

A buddy of mine did it with a regular boot from a manual, he did some custom work to get it under the console, but now he can't see what gear he's in. How's that? Did he put the excess of the shifter boot in the way of the PRND321 Gauge?
