• Rear drum brakes...

My rear drum breaks are beginning to look disgusting, with rust forming and the such. I've seen car where people paint them yellow, And I was wondering how to repaint it a nicer black, maybe silver. Anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish this? What paint to use and how? Thanks! I used some High heat paint, about 500 Degrees. You jack the car up, and take off the wheels, and then just slide off the drum, sand it down really good, then paint it whatever color you want.

EDIT: Oh yeah, do three THIN coats w/ about 10 min in between them.

In the future if you have the money look for a rearend with disc brakes on it fs, that will also be good if you need a gearchange too. As for painting it. I didn't want to paint mine because that much red on it for my car i didn't think it would look right. I just took my rear wheels off and took a wire wheel on my power drill and got the rust off. No biggie, looks brand new, and you don't have to get messy with paint. I think painted drums looks kind of cheesy. Painted calipers are alright though. I have a 96 and I must of spent 4 hours trying to pull my rear drums off because they get stuck on there good. If you ever need to change them which you don't usually need to. And you can't get the drums off I suggest getting a product calld Aerokroil. It's a penetrant lubricant. Just spray some of that around the axle and leave it for a few minutes and try to pound the drum off. I wouldn't waste time taking if off and painting it though.

mine slid right off of the wheel hmm, oh well. I painted mine black so I could actually HIDE the drums. Before, they were all brown and gross, but now they're black and nice

Got pics?

I want to paint my drums black, but I have some issues:
1. Gloss or Flat black?
2. Should I use a clearcoat? I'm thinking about the winter sand and salt that may corrode the paint.
3. Do I HAVE to take the drums off? Couldn't I just leave them on, tape off the areas, and paint?
Thanks

I say gloss, makes it look a little nicer. I didn't use clear coat on mine, but I guess since you have salt and sand, it would be a good idea. All you gotta do to get the drum brake off is take off the wheel, then take the drum off like you took off the wheel. It's not hard, trust me. But if you do leave them on, mask off like no other. Put sheets, newspapers, or whatever all over the fender and such. Oh, and no, I don't have pics, but I could try and take some later on this weekend if you'd like .

EDIT: Just make sure your parking brake isn't one whenever you try to take the drums off.

Thanks for the info, BlitzPuppet. I think I'll take the drums off, and I will remember about the parking brake
