  • Louvres for late model...

Does anyone make louvres for a late model ('99) Camaro? I think they'd look cool, and here in sunny Florida they would certainly help keep ME cool!

I did a search on this forum and the internet in general and found nada.

you know those louver things that you used to see on the back window of 3rd gens. They're those black horizontal things that go all down your rear window but you can still see out. I saw one on a new mustang a while back, didn't look to bad, wouldn't say it looked great though but it was different.

Those things look really good on new mustangs. I dunno how they would look on a camaro. That's one of those things where you kind of have to see it to picture it. Who is it that makes them?

Thanks Red2K1! That's what I was looking for... I would like to see a pic of a Camaro with the louvres installed, but its good to know where they can be found.

Currently, my rear window has tint applied (and the person applying the tint did a decent job). However, no matter how well the tint was applied, it still creates distortion. Plus, I drive to work exceptionally early and its still dark- the dark tint makes it difficult to see cars approaching from the rear (even though cars seen through the rear view mirror are more likely to be getting smaller- not larger ;^).

I've already stripped the tint that was on the side windows off (comes off really easily with a vinegar solution and some 000 fine steel wool), and I think the louvres would allow me to rid myself of the rear window tint as well (although as I understand it removing the tint without damaging the rear defroster can be tricky).

                      Thanks again,
                      Pete

Louvers (or louvres for you high-falutin types) wee popolar in sunny locales for 3rd gens. See the "87 Firebird Pics" section of my little website for pics of my louvers on my 87 Bird.

Some notes about them from a former louver owner:
                          1. The high pressure dryers in most car washes can break louvers.
                          2. Aluminum louvers are skinnier and look better. The plastic louvers will sag with time and heat.
                          3. Yes, the louvers dramatically reduce sun / heat in the car. Much more than the tint.
                          4. The louvers add more weight to the rear hatch and may cause the little rear hatch struts to wear out quicker.
                          5. The 3rd gen F bodies were much more louver-friendly because the rear glass was more flat across the back instead of the continous curve found in 4th gen f bodies.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

                            Everglades W68,
Thanks for the input... out of curiosity, have you ever seen a 4th generation with louvers, what were your impressions?

We make it to Ft. Walton once a year for an optical conference- its one of my wife's favorite beaches. If you're ever up that way again, stop by St. George Island on the way home- its fabulous.
