Here's the run down....painted with duplicolor chrome enamel paint. Used about 3 coats of filler primer and about 4 coats of paint. Waited about eight hours I think because I can't count well in my sleep, oh yea used 400 grit sandpaper as well. But after the delay my paint was still funny, being that I could still see finger prints and i had to re paint my ash tray lid. Did I do something wrong or did I just not wait long enough??? I hope that I did not spend the whole fuggin' day messing up something. What was the average time it took yours to be cool enough to handle and put back in the places, I hope and pray that's my issue and nothing else! I would wetseand it and add clearcoat, at least 2 coats if I were you to give it a nice shell. That will protect you from finger prints and more.

I'm painting mine now...

Wait longer...?
Sand it down and repaint it with like 2 coats. Let it sit for at least a day. Then hit it with like 2 coats of clear.

I used duplicolor clear coat. It did wonders. Before I clearcoated it my pieces looked like crap, they dried a couple different shades of black/gray, I still have no idea why. But I hit them with about 3 coats of clear coat and now they look great, perfectly blended color. I wetsanded mine with 400 grit sandpaper, I did one piece with 800, but didn't think it made any difference, 400 seemed to be plenty. And don't touch them after you paint. just let them sit and dry overnight, then you don't have fingerprints. I agree with sandman, if you've still got the prints, sand it down once more until its smooth. A couple more coats of paint (I'd say 2-4), let dry a couple hours, then clear coat (2-3 coats) Pics of mine are on page four on link listed in my sig, I used duplicolor paint and clear coat Good luck

I used the chrome stuff once before and I had the same problem. It may be something in that kind. I just gave up and went with silver. Check the sig for pics

I didnt prep, or sand or primer... I just sprayed Dulicolor Pewter, about 5 coats, then I sprayed another 5 clear ontop of that. Still has the facotry "leather appearance" look to it and is very shiny. I have spilled soda, and dropped a cigarette ash on the console, no problems, cleaned up with a litte soap and water. Have had the pieces painted for about 6 months, and nothing as scratched or faded or clouded up...

Hey, I removed the shifter knob and painted it as well, but I had no plans on keeping it cause I bought a t-handled one. I painted it as well, but when I used the clear coat on it, but is looked like it made the chrome dull as hell. If i don't put any clear coating on the parts and let them sit for about 3 days is there any negative effects. Oh also the clear coat was high temp enamel paint that I had left over from painting my H20 pump.....does it matter?
