mirror reading lamps not working properly

so when i bought my car the reading lamps did not work. i didnt know why. while i was at a junk yard i seen a wire go down to the mirror and i didnt have that on mine. well i found it hidden up in the roof panel. i plugged it in and it would stay on all the time. Can yall tell me what i need to do to fix this?
