• I'm done with this paint :(

Last night I was taking Steve to pick his car up from getting some work done on it. I pulled in slowly..as I always do into a parking spot and bumped the front air dam piece ever so gently...into the damn curb! I figured it was nothing but when we got out it was awful .....a big long line of raw fiberglass and then also at the two points of the piece!! I am sure had the curb been a nice new smooth one and not battered up like some shratnel shot out of a cannon that the damage wouldnt be nearly as bad as it is. After Steve and I discussed I'm going to have to get the whole thing repainted in NON CANDY paint.

Figured he'd charge a good bit for fixing the air dam....and this was my fault and every time I get a chip or nick its going to be the same thing. With regular paint I can even touch it up myself. Hopefully I can get it repainted April 16th when I was suppose to take it in to fix the chips/cracks that I found Wednesday prior to this.

BTW...the colors will be the same in the flames...just not stupid candy paint

like they said, why didn't you use non-candy paint in the first place? what's the difference between that and regular paint?

Okay here's what makes candy paint difficult to impossible to touch up as I've been told. Candy paint is very transparent and its color is based upon what color base you use and how many layers you apply. The more you apply the darker it will get. When you touch up an area you have to of course apply some of the candy to the surrounding paint where the damage to blend it but doing so will get more color on that area that alreayd has the color which will change the look...ie more layers...more color the darker it will get. Where as regular paint the more you apply it doesnt change color because it's opaque.

Here's my whole problem with what went on:

I told him I wanted to do orange, magenta into purple for my colors. I told him I liked the color of HOK's Tangerine. He showed me the HOK paint samples. I didnt know anything about HOK colors other then what I liked based only on the color. He never told at any time that he was using candy paint. He never discussed with me that candy paint was impossible to touch up. Only thing he told me was that the purple I picked could be changed in its color/depth by layers because it was somewhat transparent.

He knew I had a daily driver so hence its prone to chips. He should've discussed with the me what kind of paints I should chose. I was only going by colors....not type of paint. Had he told me...ie... "given this is a daily driver here's what paint we should use because......" But he didnt. Not until AFTER he painted it and I went over to get the rear gfx pieces put on he was talking about somebody else car he painted and that they originally wanted candy and he told them they shouldnt since it was a daily driver. At that point in time I said to him "OH really? I didnt know anything about the candy paint" He said "Oh but I told you" I said he didnt and he said "well you picked that orange" I said "Well I said I only wanted a color like that...not that it had to be that" and he didnt say anything. I've told him over and over again that he never talked to me about it.

Here's some info I found on candies

HK is correct about the kandies...but here is how I explain candies to my customers when I'm trying to pimp a bit more out of a respray.
Imagine that there are only 2 types of paint jobs, 2-stage (bi-stage/bi-coat) and 3-stage (tri-stage/tri-coat). (there are many other ways to paint a vehicle, but these are the most popular with todays most popular paint: Urethane)

A two-stage paint is one that has two parts (duh!)...a Basecoat (the color that the vehicle is; Black, Yellow, Flame Red, Grandma's panties Green...whatever), then a clearcoat (many layers of Clear sprayed...together called The Clear Coat) over that.

The Basecoat, if sprayed by itself looks very dull...it's basically just a layer of color. The basecoat can have additives in it, like pearl, metallic, and color-change prisms. But it's still relatively dull when sprayed.

The Clearcoat is what makes the surface shiny. It's just there to act as a flat, polishable surface that protects the color layer from the wind, rock chips, UV rays, bird poop...whatever. That's all that it does.

That's your basic 2-stage paintjob...spray it a color, then clear it.

Your 3-stage paintjob has another step BETWEEN the normal steps. Lets say you spray your car bright-*** Viper Silver. It's a very VERY sparkly, metallic silver. Then, lets say that you dillute a color (say, a dark red with lots of pearl added) with clearcoat, say 50% paint and 50% clearcoat. You're going to have a Semi-transparent Red Pearl, right? If you spray that Red-pearl over the silver base, you are going to be able to see the silver sparkle THROUGH the Red-Pearl coat. This makes the red look lighter, Sparkly, and DEEEEEP! The more coats of Red you put on, the darker the Red looks, and the less you can see the silver. This is, Basically, Kandy-Apple-Red. You get Kandy-Cobalt-Blue by shooting a Cobalt-Blue Kandy Coat (a semi-transparent Blue-Pearl) over another color (say, silver, or Gold). Kandy-Tangerine is Semi-Transparent Tangerine over another color.

Then you put clear over the whole thing, just like before.

The reason that tri-coats are harder to spray than 2-coats is that imagine when you spray a 5"wide stripe of pearl over the silver across your panel. Then, imagine coming back and trying to spray your next stripe RIGHT NEXT to the first one, without any overlap...because where you sprayed would be 1-layer thick. If the two stripes overlapped, the red would be 2-layers thick, and would be darker, right? *This isn't how you spray a kandy...you actually do overlap, but I'm not going to get into that here*. Plus, if you put a run in the kandy-coat...there's nearly no way to fix it without re-spraying the base color and re-kandy-ing the entire peice. Kandy's are the BEST colors in MY opinion...but they are difficult to shoot, and difficult to fix if you have a wreck down the road sometime.

That stinks that the paint is so delicate. If you repaint it with the non-candy color will it still look as good? I think your car is amazing, I pass by your house whenever I'm leaving mine (I actually live a block away from you guys). The car just looks awesome. Good luck though with what you choose to do.

AlienInv8r .....so what's the street you live in? I think I might remember seeing a silver camaro go by ....guess ya never wave?????? Supposedly the paint will look almost exactly the same but just wont have the depth that the candies has. Next time you drive by and we're out there you better stop and say hi! :D

I found a message board on hotrodding and I'm going to ask about the different kinds of paint because I was searching on there when I found the other info I posted above and saw somethign about another kind of paint that has the depth like candies.

I live over on preston ct. when I'm home. I'm down at college at Va Tech right now. But yeah, that was my silver camaro you probably saw driving by a few weeks ago. I just got it during my spring break a few weeks ago. It needs some work, but I got a great price on it so it was plenty worth it. But my semester ends in the beginning of may, I'll definately stop by your guys place one day when your out and ask for some tips on making my car look better, haha =) Your cars look so good, I think they're the reason I found a liking to f-bodys. Great work, and I hope everything with the paint works out for the best.
