• Thought I Rubbed through the clearcoat but i didnt

Grrr.... There was a nasty spot on the rear bumper so i tried wetsanding it down a bit and then polishing it up. looks like i went through the clearcoat though. i used 2000 grit lightly and followed it with meguiars fine cut cleaner and then some mother's polish/glaze. the area is really nasty/dull looking when you look at it in the light. this is the bumper that had the accident a while back, so im assuming they put the clearcoat on really thin. grrrrr.... anyone know how much its going to cost to get a 4 by 8 inch area touched up? (the paint underneath is fine, its just the clearcoat)

edit: i thought i rubbed through it, but it just was still dull and needed some more buffing. all is well

Ouch man, I don't think there is much you can do for a spot that big without making it look like a 2nd rate touch up job... I'd take it to a professional. Advice to the newbie detailers out there, don't try using sandpaper if you've never done it before, it's more headaches than you realize and waxing/rubbing compounds only HIDE the dull finish, they never fix it for good!

i suppose the shop will have to sand the clear coat off the entire rear bumper and recoat it? i dont think you can apply new clear on top of old clear and try to blend it can you?

He's right Larry, newbies like you shouldn't be messing with stuff like that. Due to this incident I recomend you step down as appearance moderater and make way for someone a tad more competent :D And I totally think you could fix it with some duplicolor. Clear coat is alot easier to touch up than paint. It'd be worth a try, you'll spend at least 100 bucks getting it fixed professionally

One thing to remember is that GM doesn't put a lot paint on the front or rear bumpers.... I did the same thing to my Cavalier after someone rearended me.. :(
