  • Installing t-tops, any last words for me?

    I have a set of t-tops sitting in my garage, a weak off from work, and my nerve built up. I've been studying all the conversion guides available, and I'm fairly confident it'll be smooth but time-consuming process.

    I'd like to hear if those who've come before me have any final tips and warnings I should look out for.

        I'm putting mine in next week. I know that there will be no regrets the first time I take a cruise with the tops off. Don't sweat it!

          yeah, I've done everything required before (cutting fiberglass w/ a dremel, cutting metal w/ a sawzall, bending and shaving metal into the right shape). I've just never done it all it once before or on something that'll be increbidly expensive to fix if I f. it up.

            Once you make the first scratch there's no turning back.

            It's well worth it! Even some of the other things that have popped up (wearing paint where the tops meet the b-pillar which can be solved by putting some rubber trim on it) I still don't regret it a bit. Just take your time, dont' rush, and if you get in a pinch stop and ask questions. A dozen of us have done it, look us up on IM or e-mail and we'll be glad to help.

              it is well worth it.

              i just did mine last saturday and sunday. it took me about a day and a half. buy some black gasket sealant. i had to put it on under the weatherstripping where the t-top trim screws down on the top. with it, i have no leaks at all. i would recommend getting a grinder and an air cutter. the grinder made it really easy to get the edges down and cleaned up. i think the hardest part was getting the bondo on good.

              mine doesn't rub. i have almost an equal amount of space between the front and back.

              also, i did not buy a new t-top trim piece for the windshield. i don't see the necessity of having it.

              cover EVERYTHING in your car. mine was dirty as hell when i got through. i kept it covered, but the flying metal and fiberglass still got into all the ducts.

                Just a few tips. Make sure you cover Your interior, and winshield/rear window with a material that Metal shavings won't burn through.

                Also where you take the roof bars at each side of the car you will need to make a bracket to go onto the the four corners for the weather stripping to fit. Other than those it isn't too bad.

                The conversion went great and my dad did a wonderful factory looking job with no leaks no nothing.

                I also don't regret doing the conversion to this day. Here's a Pic of my car now.

                    You guys are such crazy bastards! Oh my goodness! ACK! ACK! Everytime I look at those shots where the car looks completely stripped I wince... but oh my god! :eek: after shots look sooooo nice. I commend all with large enough balls to do it... and navigatorbob... good luck... I'm sure it'll go just fine.

                      I am still trying to find someone to help me install t-tops. I've asked my dad, my friends dad, GM, but I still can't find someone to help me. Gm said they did it once, and will never do it again. Any help? Anyone? How about some phone #'s for people around the bay area, CA? Good Luck man!

                        Thanks for the tips guys! I'm about to get started in a few minutes.

                        And Mikey, when this is done, and I'd be glad to drive up there (I'm in So Cal) and help you some weekend. I've got friends in the bay area I haven't seen in awhile anyways.
