Removing tint?

Well the jerkoff the broke into my car scratched the tint on the rear hatch. I believe insurnce will be covering it but all the places I got quotes for added about 30-40 bucks just for taking the old stuff off. Now I, like many of you have at some point, said to myself, I can probably do this by myself rather than paying. I've been wrong on many occasions after saying this, so I'd like to know how hard it would be [img]tongue.gif[/img] will it peel off nicely or will be be all sticky as nasty and not worth my time? The tint is probably 6 years old if that matters.

we took the tint off the rear window of my brother's first explorer before he killed it. the trick was to just get a big/good tear started. it wasnt all that bad. that tint off stuff they sell at wallmart helped a bit too.

you can do, but your gonna wanna invest in some 3M adhesive remover.....and let it soak, get a blade, and start scrappin...thats it...

get some windex
spray the tint all over till its all wet
get some newspaper and lay it over it, it will stick to it
soak the newspaper again
rewet as needed for an hour


grab an edge and pull and it should come right off with VERY little cleanup


if you dont do the windex thing, you will spend at least an hour on each window getting sticky **** off of it......

I pulled tint off a car last week and found an excellent method.

Spray the glass down well with Simple Green, and cover it with cling wrap. This prevents the Simple Green from drying or running off. Let it sit, preferably in the sun and heat, for a little while. 30 minutes worked well for me. Then let the defrost run on it for at least 5 minutes at full heat and power. This is especially useful on the rear! Now use a razor to pick a small portion of the tint, just enough to get your fingers on. Now you can pull slowly and carefully, and the adhesive will come off with the tint. Only a little residue will be left anywhere on the glass, and a few good cleanings with Windex will have the glass completely clean.

I have heard of a lot of different substances being used to remove the adhesive that is left after the film is removed. I used the following and found that Windex still works the best: windex, amonia, simple green, dish detergent and water, WD-40. They all did a good job, but the Windex did better, and is not as harsh as the amonia.
