  • Interior paint

I've seen on here a few people who have painted some interior things (a/c outs, some dash, door parts, etc.) What I'm wanting to know is what kind of paint did you buy? Any kind of special "interior" car paint or just normal car body spray paint like they sell at Wal-Mart? If anyone has any pics to post up here to give me more ideas that would be great.

I think you have to use some kinda paint that works good on plastic.... I am too scared to even attempt to do this, instead I am waiting on material to arrive to create custom brushed aluminium dash trimmings at a friends' metal shop who has a laser cutter machine and the works...

I did do a search, only one person mentioned the actual paint. He called it Duplicolor, available almost anywhere. Sound right?

Regular spray paint should work although there are interior paints out there. Sandman has a good write up on how to do it and alot of pics. I should probably book mark it so I can link it instead of always telling people about it. I have a pic in my sig on the last page last pic. I got some "metallic" paint and put a couple coats of that on along with a couple coats of clearcoat (I didn't sand mine either). Haven't had a single problem with it, if worse comes to worse just repaint it

i did my speaker grills, rear hatch light piece, aftermarket head unit mount, door switch pannnels, and rear defrost pannel silver. Since I work at Home Depot, I was able to get this stuff cheap. Heres what you can use.

Prouct # 1008, Made by Zinsser
              BIN PRIMER SEALER (Stain Killer)
              - The stuff supposedly dries in 15 min. What i did was just cleaned the piece, and gave it a nice spray covering the surface nicely w/o dripping.
**NOTE- YOU HAVE TO STAY WITH THIS STUFF AND DO THIS EXACTLY BY THE MINUTE**

After 20 minutes of drying, it will still be sort of stickey- it needs to be this way.

Apply the color of choice while the BIN Primer is still stickey. I suggest a basic mat, nothing glossy since it might scratch. Apply the color of choice without letting it drip- it makes the plastic look wierd when you sand it down. If you need to, do several light coats.

Let it dry, and then pop em back into where they came from and enjoy.

I did mine right before I put the RS away for the winter. I went into the car yesterday and checked them out, and there wasnt any flaking at all. Everything still looks good, even through the 10 degree weather weve been having. If it does peel or flake for whatever reason- just re paint them!

              Hope this helped.

                    yes- very clean and shiney-

btw how did your red interior work out with the high gloss? does it scratch at all?

i decided to go with silver in mine, and red and silver outside- looks sweet- with the repaint from this fall the car looks great- just need some pics.

I didn't use a high gloss paint, just regular spray and then clearcoat.

I didn't use regular paint on mine...mine was an enamel (stuff the use on the exterior of cars)...the more coats I put on the deep and more glossy mine turned out...then shot it with a few coats of clear...sig line has pics on how it turned out

PS...I pretty sure i'm the only one whose ever mentioned duplicolor on the board...and thats what i used...duplicolor primer, enamel, and clear.

i used aluminum duplicolor paint on mine. it had the closest match in color to the exterior of my car. i put like 3 coats of it on after i scuffed the peices and primed them with a couple coats. if you really want a smooth finish, wet sand the primer really lightly. otherwise it will come all the way off. then do the paint coats. My dad does body work(He's the one that fixed my car) and he said that right as the paint is starting to dry do one coat of clear so it mixes in with the color so you won't get worn off spots in high contact area's. the only problem with this is that if it's a real metalic paint it likes to alter the pigments in the paint. it happened to mine. What i did after that happened was put another coat of paint on. That got the color back. then i put 3 coats of clear on after it dried. After all was said and done i put it in the garage for the winter. i went out the other day to show my cousin my Neon's inside and his jacket i thought was gonna scratch my interiot. but he put a snap right into the center console and it didn't even leave a mark. just hope it helps!

I recently did that on my car..I used the exterior touch up paint that sells at Wal-Mart for about $4.00.I used up about three cans and still needed more.Sand the trim parts first with a fine type sand paper, then i applied about 4-5 thin coats of paint ,then topped it off with 2 coats of clear.Lookes awesome.I'll try to post some pics later to show u the results.
