Any idea how much weight that will get rid of?

Can you paint over the CF to match the car?
          Thanks,
JAM
02 Firebird GT

Depends on what CF they used, how many layers, what type of resin, how it was cured, if they used pre-preg instead of seperate CF/resin and several other factors as to how much weight it will get rid of.

Depending on how well they know their stuff and how the part was prepared CF can be painted. What is usually required is producing the part with a layer of peel-ply which gives it a resin finish that can be sanded and painted. There are plenty of aircraft with CF parts that are painted.

That particular piece says it utilizes a gel-coat. I'm only familiar with gel-coat as it applies to fiberglass so I'm not sure how it will affect the CF. That particular piece also is utilizing 6K CF. This means that there are 6000 filaments of fiber per strand. It should be a fairly strong part but it will also be rather heavy because of the number of filaments.

One thing you must remember about carbon fiber however is that it tends to shatter. Where normally a rock hits your hood at 70mph it leaves a little nick or chip, with a CF part you are quite likely to have one or many cracks running all over the part.

I've personally run into this problem. I'm attempting to produce my own CF body panels and had to modify my first design to include a thin outer layer of fiberglass to prevent the shattering. I currently researching modifying my design again to remove the outer layer of fiberglass and replace it with a carbon/kevlar hybrid to increase the impact resistance.

Oh, and whoever said CF is rice needs to do a little homework before commenting. A well done CF composite piece need not look any different from a metallic piece. It will just drop a significant amount of weight.
