What differences set the 2 apart?

Nothing until you get to 98+, all the 95-96 3.8's looked like the 93-95 3.4L, If your good, the engine sounds different on the 3.4L.

Edit-If your talking about engines the 3.8 says 3800 series 2,

Also 3.4L I believe had "Camaro" on the side where it would normally say Z28 or SS. I think they stopped doing that in 95 so it would only help with 93-94's. I'm not sure what years but the older 3.4Ls also came with hubcaps.

All 93-97s came with rear drum brakes, unless you had the Y87 package, where you got rear discs.

Not too sure about that one.. I used to own a black 1994 3.4L camaro, and I remeber it having the "camaro" badging on the sides b/c I painted mine!

Also, to add another difference: The pre'97 camaros have no ORANGE color rear tail lamps.

also the firebird you could tell the difference from the 3.4 from the 3.8 from the stock rim's... the 95+ 3.8L had 5 star rim's while the 3.4 had some goofy looking rim's and when i had my 3.4L camaro i had camaro on the side on it also..

97's had different rims also, same as 98 & 99 maybe 2000? I'm almost certain the 94 had camaro on the fender. I thought 97's had all disk

I can pick out the 1997s in a heart beat, newer tail lights and the older front fascia. Other than than.. I dunno.
