  • engine cleaning...

Hi..I realize that there have been previous posts on cleaning the engine as I did use the search function...lol. Anyway, I've wanted to clean my engine for some time but I'm skeptical because I'm afraid of messing something up (btw..is it really necessary to clean the engine?..what are the benefits of doing it?). What do I need to cover up i.e. not get wet? I'm thinking anything electrical and the alternator and spark plugs/ ditributer..but I have heard that as long as it's a fuel ingected engine, there is no need to cover anything up?..so I'm a bit confused. Also..is it safe to use a pressure washer on not only the engine but the wires as well?..I'm just worried the pressure might cut the wires..anyways..thanks

Right, there are posts on this. I would suggest that you never use a pressure washer because it forces water into places it just belong.

Cover your alternator, ECM, and under hood fuse boxes. As a cleaner I like and use Gunk foaming engine cleaner. I have used Orange Blast and someting called Green whatever and both worked Okay, but I like foaming Gunk.

I've got 3 chevys, '88, '98 & '02, I've never covered anything up. I make sure the engine bay is real cool, and hit it with some Simple Green, let it soak & just rinse it off. Water's going to get in your engine bay just from driving.
