lol...I did the same damn thing....only I did it for my HVAC bulbs....I got indigle gauges....btw what kind of paint did you use??...I had some high heat paint layin around so I used that...
Maybe I did get some bad paint... oh well, they don't smell now. Been 2 years now and they're still good & red.
I used Testors oil-based Enamel hobby paint (the stuff you can get for like $0.96 at wal mart in the toy dept) I had some laying around for my model cars and just used that.
you just paint them to do this? how many bulbs are their? i was just gunna go buy bulbs be if this is cheaper then i will do it.

I painted two red coats. i think its like 7-8 bulbs... but only down side is I can't see my high beam image.
I just did this tonight!
Only I did it by replacing the clear bulbs with red ones. Bulbs were $3.00 for 2 bulbs. You need 5.
There are 9 bulbs total, 2 are turn signals, 1 is the Highbeam light, and 1 is your odometer light. Just replace the 5 general area bulbs, none of the special indicator bulbs.
For the guy who can't see his high beams anymore... ya should have left that one clear, its the only thing that bulb lights up, you wouldn't have seen any differance.
I'll try to get some pics up soon.

But I wanted Red Guages, not reverse indiglo.
The Bulb Number was 194R I think. I'll have to check the package, but I'm pretty sure that the bulb number is 194, then you just have the letter of the color you use. (There was blue, red, green, and orange, I think)
No, you don't have to take off the needles. Infact, you don't even take off the plastic over the guages.
You need to pull the whole guage cluster out, following these steps:
1. Remove pannel covering the underside of the dash (by your knees.) This is held on by two of those funny push pin things.
2. Remove the bracket around the steering column (2 Nuts)
3. Lower Steering column. You don't need to take it all the way off, just loosen the nuts as far as you can to drop it down, without having it fall off.
4. Remove the trim around the guage cluster. (2 Screws/Bolts on the top edge)
5. Remove the guage cluster bolts. (4 Bolts)
6. Remove the Guage cluster. You will need to pull straight out, as its pluged into a pin connecter on the back. (I think the pre 97's have a ribbon connector, so you will need to pull out the cluster and then un plug it.
Now you you have access to the back of the cluster. There are Nine (9) little things you can twist out. These are the backs of the bulb bases. 5 of them are ones that light up the guages in general, the other 4 are Odometer Light, High Beam Light, and Turn Signals.
Replace the 5 general light ones with the 194R bulbs. (To check which ones light up the turn signals, ect, shine a flash light though the hole. If something lights up, leave it clear. If nothing really shows though, make it red.
Then just put things back together. Though, you might want to test it before you screw everything back together, incase you got a dud bulb or something.
Good Luck! Any questions feel free to ask, or email me.
