  • need help on firebird decal and phoenix logo

it seems that on my firebird the firebird and bird logo between my rear taillights is fading and looks kinda pink now. does anyone know how to remove it? i know if i try scratching it i will ruin the plastic around it. any ideas?

Mines been pink for awhile =) Plastic "razor blade" can remove it if its a decal.

i just replaced my 'Firebird' on the back (with some decals from brent franker). my bird still looks ok. i will replace when it starts to fade. i put the bird from brent on my whisper intake -- vast improvement over the 3800II.

i did a little initial wet sanding with 2000 grit on the text. 1500 or 1000 is likely a better choice. 2000 takes forever but its what i had on hand. [i left just a hint of the bottom of the letters so that i had something to guide placement of the vinyl decal.] you want to remove any of the red and level the edges of the letters. when happy switch over to 3M Perfect-It II rubbing compound. the whole process takes about 20 minutes to remove the text.

if you dont think its smooth/level enough switch back to wet sanding and then use the rubbing compound again.

heat it up with a hair dryer or heat gun on low heat. be careful not to screw up the paint. once the decal is warm, it should be easy to peel away, use a razor blade or utility knife if u have to.

the stock firebird and logo on the taillight 'center' is not a decal.

I wet sanded mine off. there are pics on my cardomain page... the pics I have still show it being a little scratched up but I got it really shiny by using a buffer on it. Its really glossy now like my tailights but I dont have new pics, sorry. I was thinking of getting a new decal for it but i am used to it plain right now.

I took the easy way out and ordered a whole new filler panel from www.gmpartsdirect.com.

i think i found the cure. if u put wax on it it brings the red right up. a family friend had the same problem on his bird and i just tried it and worked. i'll try to get a pic of it soon.

did all firebirds come with this red on the filler panel? or did the last owner of my car just take it off? because mine is just black, like the rest of the filler panel.

all firebirds came with this. some people remove it since they seem to have issues with driving a 'firebird'.

i believe all firebirds have it. Formulas are solid black.

Formulas have the same rear panel filler as Firebird.

I'm resurrecting this old thread to report that the replacement panel I bought (see above) has begun to show significant fading. So, I ordered a new "Firebird" lettering and bird decal from bfranker ($12) . I still had the first filler panel in the garage. I wet sanded off the factory stencil using 1500 paper. Then I polished up the panel using 3M Scratch Remover ($6). I applied the new decal and then installed the "new" old filler panel.

Once again, my filler panel looks great!!!!
