I would take the entire caliper off the rotor and hang it with safetywire or a coat hanger and paint it. Then put it all back together after it dries. I hate to see painted pads. If you paint just the calipers and mount plates then it should look pretty good. My caliper & drum painting experience is that if you paint the calipers/drums only once or twice with high heat paint, they tend to heat and partially burn off here and there.... so it is a great idea to paint it at least 3 times, and then apply an even higher temp clear coat at least once..
I painted my rear drums twice originally and noticed that the paint on the edge of the drum came off a little bit, so I took it off and repainted the things again but this time 2 more times, and now its all fine. The painted drums also had a burnt paint smell effect after the initial paint process, this took a couple of days to go away and now there is no smell.
I will be painting my calipers as well (making sure I apply 3 coats of black, and 1 coat of clear), as soon as my caliper metal decals arrive...
here is a pic of the decals that is a great addition to any caliper (makes it look great...)
Hope this info helps you a little more

Paint them before you take the pads off so that when you swap pads you have normal looking pads behind the painted calipers.
I, too, hate painted pads.2002 5-spd NBM Camaro

Decals: http://firebatscave.deeztech.com\firebird.hml
As for painting, I didn't use high temp paint and I opted to paint with a brush instead of aerosol to control the overspray. I also sanded the surface with my dremel. Paint the caliper when the pads are off and the caliper is hanging there.(Use safetywire or a coat hangar to prevent stress on the brake lines)\" As being is to becoming, so is pure itellect to opinion, so is science to belief, and understanding to the peception of shadows.\" - Plato
