Is there a way to shave the antenna for a 98 Firebird and get a good signal? I wouldn't mind having a smooth rear fender, but I don't want my tunes to suffer. If anyone has done this I'd love to hear some input. I just think 4th Gens would look better with a smooth rear fender and not the "lightning rod" sized antenna. :D
I know a few people have done it. RevLimit did (he's not on the board anymore, but if you search for him I think he kept his AIM id in his profile).

He's not talking about a power antenna. He wants to shave it off and run a antenna in the window for instance.

Just a thought... You could get some copper wire and connect it to the antenna brace underneath, shave the antenna, and then run the wire through the carpet a little bit. That might garner a decent signal.
There really isn't an easy way to shave the antenna. Not that I've found. I seriously doubt there is a bolt on kit like that. You'll have to take off the antenna, weld in a filler piece, then paint. I know there are integrated antenna kits out there. Alot of new cars have them. Call up a local sterio shop and ask about one.
There is a kit out there that includes a stick on antenna. Just a long thin plastic strip that you stick to your rear window. I have heard mixed results using this kit. Sorry don't have any links for you. :( But of course, there's always satellite radio! Heard many people putting the small antenna inside their actual hatch with great results.
I put a power antena on my 94 Camaro took a lil work but I got it in in under two hours from start to finish. But they only problem I had was I didn't have all the parts I needed so I had to keep running up to the dealership to keep getting the parts that I needed.
It amazes me that people are still posting about their antennas and what antennas they have, when the guy simply asked how to get rid of his.
REMINDER: This thread was made by 98Fbird to get info on shaving the antenna. That means taking it off completely and extending the quarter panel to cover the hole it leaves. Sorry I can't help you, 98Fbird. I don't know anything about shaving, although I'd also like to know about shaving mine.
Well, it would be a tradeoff, unless you simply installed an external antenna somewhere else. An external antenna will always get better reception.
That said, if you listen to mostly local stations you could probably mount an antenna in the back window or something and get decent reception, at least "good enough" for the local stations.
On long trips, I hook up a CB, and I velcro a short CB antenna from a handheld CB so that it is sticking up from the back of my rear seats, in the rear window. I can receive OK but not near as good as an external...
Maybe there are other solutions out there. My '79 Trans Am had a wire antenna in the glass of the front windwhield...
