I am giving up at this point. I would have loved to do the aluminum door panels but MAN is it a PITA... i tried galvanized steel sheets and it looked decent but didnt come in the size i needed. also, once you destroy all of the little tabs holding the leather to the door, it is very hard to get it all back together and STURDY!!!
for anyone attempting this, i used a lot of screws and washers to attach the door to the panel. it works fairly well for the gist of things but once you pop all the panels it will just never be the same..
I went to LOWES and got aluminum flashing, it was in the perfect size, 20" by 10' so i also had plenty to work with, i made three door panels
the first one i juse cut what i though i HAD to cut, and didnt do an exact outline, that didnt work out at all, dont even attempt. if you are going to try it, trace out the panel onto the metal and cut (cutting is also what makes this project so much of a pain, wear good gloves, i was bleeding A LOT by the time i was finished with the one panel.
good luck to anyone who wants to continue this project, i think im going to leave this one alone for a while... maybe ill try using silvery silky cloth? that might look cool and have some of the same effects as metal... what do you guys/gals think?
