• STOCK alloy wheels yellowing

 Alright I have a question. I live in Pittsburgh, PA and drive my car year round. This is the 3rd winter that I've had my car and have never had this problem before: My stock alloy wheels are beginning to yellow...is this b/c of the road salt, or what? AND, is this permanant? ALSO, I have some tar/really caked on brake dust on my front wheels, and it won't come off...what can I use that won't be TOO abrasive? Would a clay bar do the job? ALSO...(i know i have LOTS of problems) right around the valve stem I can't seem to get clean...would a toothbrush work? Sorry if some of these questions are stupid, but I've never had problems getting crud off my wheels before. Thanks for all the input guys/gals.

Mine are too. i have no idea how to get rid of it. i might just have them redone. my dad can do that for free. i have the paint code i think for the paint used on my tires. they are the silver Aluminum rims. i like the rims and i want them all to look the same. you don't notice it until it snow's out. mine doesn't even get driven in salt. Cassie- my car was a repairable from your home state. Maybe it's something in the air. LOL but i don't know what else to do but have them painted. my dad did the one when i fixed it cause it was scratched badly. it turned out nicely. matched up with the lug caps nicely. other then that i don't know what to do. Step 1: Ditch your looser mustang bf

            Step 2: Marry me :D

Now that I'm done leghumping, it's probably the clearcoat on your rims discoloring. There might be a way to remove it and reclearcoat it or paint them and clearcoat it like mentioned. Not to sure what claybar would do on rims, might get the job done. Guess you could give it a try after you claybar your car (wouldn't want to ruin a perfect claybar) or try various chemicals if worse comes to worse just repaint them.

Actually I think claybar effects the wax thats on your car and doesn't touch the clearcoat so I'm not sure what it'll do on rims that have no wax on them

Hey Cassie, I had that prob with my 91 camaro. I would try a toothbrush and some mothers aluminum or chrome polish, a rag, and alot of elbow grease. Have fun.

I would wash the wheels first.

Try using some wheel cleaner. If the tar is still there, try some WD-40. It's very good at removing tar and gunk.

Then if there is still some residue embedded into the paint of the wheel. Try some paint cleaners, careful not to stay at an area too long. Then apply wax to it. Should get rid of most if not ALL of that garbage.

I think you need to question your neighbors with pets. Maybe their dogs are peeing on your wheels :D
