Ok well I was bored so I decided to do some painting. I followed sandmans directions to a t. I did one piece (the plate around sgs button) first in case I screwed up. I sanded it down with 400 then 800 grit, it was d@mn smooth. then 3 coats of primer, 6 paint, 3 clear coat. and the problem is it's not as glossy as I wanted it. I mean if you look at sandmans it's perfectly glossy, looks like glass. I was hoping for that look. Mine is smooth, but not as much as I wanted. Anyone have any idea anything I could have done wrong? I used dupicolor universal black, it's black metallic, looks pretty cool, I don't know if the metallic specks make it not smooth or what. It didn't look smooth after I primered it could that be the problem? Is there anything I can rub it down with to smooth it out? any ideas? thanks

edit: oh and does anyone know how to get the ash tray lid out of a 97 auto firebird? Do I have to take the console out?

After the clear coat is dry...wet sand it with 1000 grit plus sandpaper..then polish it and put carnuba wax on it

Sand it down until it is really smooth. The faster you sand it the better. Make sure you wipe the parts down with rubbing alcohol - let it air dry. Spray one more paint coat on and two of clear. Post results.

Edit - I use the towels I buff Zaino off to polish the parts, just a quick wipe and that's it... personally, I'd say to try and stay away from caranuba on the inside.

When I did my interior I just used 3M Rubbing compound to polish, and Mequieers gold class wax to seal it. And of course to keep it hella shiny..you need to wax the peices maybe 3 or 4 times a year...I like to wax the inteior every other time I wax my car. Don't recall if the gold class wax is carnueba, if its not...then I shouldn't say to use it..cause i didn't

PS...the only problem with waxing your interior too much is it will get really shiny...so if you live in a sunny area..wear sunglasses...as stupid as it sounds...the sun has glared off my interior peices right into my eye

If a piece isn't smooth after primer then it needs to be sanded until smooth, just sand the piece until it's smooth after each coat of paint and then put the clear coat on and it should turn out smooth unless yo get specs of dust or dirt in it.

To take the ashtray lid out you will probably have take the top piece of the console out, I'm currently in the process of painting the top piece of the console on my car, I found that it was easiest to take the ashtray lid out with the console out, but I do imagine that it can be done with the console in. Remember that there is a little spring that is connected to the ashtray lid from the console and you have to disconnect one of the ends of the spring to be able to pull out the ashtray lid.

Sandman that is just sweet. I have a black interior so that would look so sweet on mine (would do door handles and the lower part like you to give it more of an accent), what kind of paint should I use if I was gonna do that?... Also can you sand that arm rest?

They're the stock knobs, just pulled the rubber covers off of them a did a lil sanding to make it smooth...they really look the best at night.

I painted my interior and I didn't sand a thing. I wanted to keep the texture look. It looks awsome and I'am having no problems with it.

My suggestion for you is silver and black. Do the door handle piece in silver, and the window/lock buttons piece in black.
Yes you can do the lower part of the door, I'd also go with silver.
You can sand the arm rest, but IMO that would look rather stupid.

Just another though I noticed that mine wern't glossy when I got done with mine. I had a can of high temp engine clear coat and that made it a lot more glossy then just regular paint clear coat. Just a thought there.
