• TSP lid I'm painting for someone.....

Just thought I'd share one of the many projects I'm working on now. This is for someone in Texas who sent me his TSP lid and I am making a set of matching FRC's also. He has anodized accents on his black Z28 and this is the same blue paint he used. I also gave a slight shadow to the flames themselves. I primed and filled the lid till is was all smooth except the edges which will have a textured edge. Then I painted it "Black Midnight Metallic" which is almost a gunmetal color.

I still have to outline the flames in silver then do the textured edge. Tell me what ya think

that looks awesome! question: not that I want to do them, it just baffles me how flames are done? I mean, I know the basic outlining, I'm just confused. could you e-mail me pics or something of the process sometime?

Well here's some pics showing the various stages.

Here's the way it looked when I got it

      Then when I primed it

      Then the flames....

      Then taped again

OHhhhh I see. That's the part I was wondering about, how you masked everything BUT the inside of the flames (the part of the flame that get painted.) So you DO have to mask the outside of the flame licks very carefully. It looks like it took a lot of little strips of masking tape to fill it all in. Now is that same procedure followed even for big flame jobs on hoods and such? they have to mask the outside of the flame that isn't painted? Cause I looked at your website and I didn't see a pic of the flames actually being masked out. That's what Iwas confused about. Thanks for the pics!! Maybe I'll experiment.

            is that red tape?
how are you going to outline it? Do you have to tape over the painted on flames? How do you get it so the paint wont come off with the tape?

Sam.....yeah they do cars the same way I did the flames...thats where I learned how to do it. Actually it was a book I had bought on Automotive Airbrushing that showed how to do it.

Steve...Yes that red pinstriping tape..thats what the automotive people use for flames. I will outline the flames by hand with a small brush.

Yes plus I clearcoat before I add the outline so there's not as much of a ridge from the flames being taped off.
