When I was a kid, I worked in an autobody shop. then, everything was lacquer jobs. Today, lacquer is very, very expensive. Today there are urethane paints, clear coats, epoxyies, enamels, (thats just the paints) not to mention the base material primers, barrier coats, water based, solvent based, etc. Don't let anyone fool you. to do the job right, the whole car has to come apart. overspray gets everywhere on everything. even if you cover the tires and rims, it gets into the wheel wells, into the engine bay, in the trunk, in the jambs. Took me hours and hours to undo the damage the quickies did in that shop. Custom work is even more time consuming. The actual time to "Paint" may only be a few hours. Paint is only a very small piece of the puzzle.

I have personally seen two cars that were painted by maaco. Horrible. I would have EASILY tried to tackle the job myself if I had known it would turn out like that. I have a shop in town that has paint booths and guns. You bring the paint and your car and go to town! It only costs like $6 an hour I think. So if the paint costs you $250, and you figure a FULL day of prep and painting. There's another $75 for stall fees. For like $350 you could do it yourself and probably have it turn out better. Do a little research on the net to try to get some pointers and go to work.

I worked at a bodyshop for quite some time now and we paint lots of cars every day. There are so many types of different paint jobs and depending what you want for the price. If you are looking to spend under $2K for a paintjob that is being kept the same color you are going to get a quicke job thats going to have some flaws in it. Initially I said a good paintjob would cost someone around 4K-6K. Keeping in mind that this would be changing the color of the car, doing door jams, etc... Say it's outrageous if you will, but whats what your looking at if you come to our bodyshop. And there is never a day where we are not packed. Whether it's a daily driver, a show car, a hot rod, whatever. I think it was dominic who said show room quality is going to cost anywhere from 6k-10k. I think he was being generous there too. A lot of the classic cars, or the hot rods you see. They can go well over 10k in price for a paintjob. We've done many hot rods where we spent long periods of time making completely perfect from top to bottom. And hey, if you don't want to beleive it from a guy that works in a bodyshop, then beleive everyone else on here that you are getting ripped if it's over 2k. A lot of people are about looking good. Some just need to get where they need to go. This is life. And to quote what a few people said earlier "you get what you pay for".
Enjoy kiddies

Oh man please. Don't waste your money on maaco. They use the horriblest cheapest paint. They don't do hardly no prep work at all. Your car will probably start peeling in no time. On top of that they'll probably get over spray everywhere. You get what you pay for!!!
