• From factory painted wheels to Polished Aluminum

i don't want to hijack threads so i'll just show my progress here. i hope to have the two driver side wheels done tomorrow; or at least one completely finished.

i tried sanding one at first, but it was a mofo. i busted up my fingers and sanded off my fingerprints. :( then i tried some paint remover, but all that did was strip the clearcoat off. i did some hunting and found the aircraft paint remover. it works pretty good. it takes a couple of good thick coats and a lot of waiting.

i'm lazy so i haven't removed the tires. if you're a naturally messy person, i'd take them off. it'll go a lot faster and the stripper might ruin your tires. it burns like he|| when it touches your skin so i can't imagine what it'd do to rubber.

you put the stripper on in thick coats and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. it'll take a layer or two of paint off so you need to readd another coat after wiping off the excess paint.

i used a foam sanding block from home depot to remove the excess paint that bubbled up from the stripper.

when most of the paint and clearcoat have been removed, clean them up with 220 or 320 grit sandpaper. get rid of all the primer by wetsanding it. i used a spray bottle full of water and just sprayed every minute or so. that keeps the sandpaper clean and gets rid of the residue so you can see what still needs to be sanded. don't worry about scratches right now, just get rid of any blemishes and smooth it all out. if you have curb rash, now is a good time to sand that out. i used a dremel on the really bad curb rash and some of the harder to get to parts then sanded them down with the paper.

after you use the 220/320, go to a finer grit like 400 or 600. usually i just jumped to 600. after sanding out a lot of the scuffs from the 220/320, i moved on to 2000 grit. the more you use the 2000 grit, the shinier they'll be.

when you're satisfied, put on the aluminum polish and buff them real good with a towel. after that, use car wax to protect them.

i still have a lot of work ahead of me. i plan to paint the inner part of the spoke a cast aluminum/black color, similar to the 35th anniv. wheels. for one, it's a mofo to get to those parts and 2, i think it will look good and unique.

i'll post more pictures as i go. hopefully i'll get one finished and i can post it tomorrow.

as for the center caps, i bought some chrome paint and painted one. i'm working on those while waiting on the stripper to settle. after painting them, i wetsanded them with 2000 grit and then polished them with rubbing compound. they aren't as shiney as the wheels, but they don't stick out being painted and the rest polished. the only best way to go would be to get the center caps made for chrome wheels.

Home depot might have it, i know you can get it at pep boys in the aerosol cans. If you want to speed up the process a little bit you can also try MEK. I use to strip aircraft wheels all the time and we'd start out with the stripper and then soak them in MEK.

i bought it at an o'reilly's auto parts store.

i just picked up a dremel bit that's the wire polisher. it's working great on some of the tougher parts. it's also doing a good job of removing some of the deeper scratches from the 220 grit.

i'll have one wheel done today for sure and another halfway done. the other two i should be able to do in about 2 days.

Which dremel bits do you use and when do you use them??

Are my salad shooters off my 95 camaro the same type of rim like your car has?
In others words, can i do this to my nasty lookin salad shooters?

After you polish it up, does it have a chrome appearance?

Domestic could you post final pics? Do they shine up just like any other polished rim given enough work? Are you going to use some sort of clear coat? I just might have to do this but don't want a redneck ghetto outcome. Looks promising

Yep... Looking good!

I'm getting ready to redo mine again. I've found some imperfections that are just bothering me too much. So... I'll be spending the next couple of weeks after work playing with my wheels. This is what they look like... image when I'm done :D

Oh.. another suggestion. Tape up the inside of the wheels (backside). You want to keep as much of the factory paint intact as possible. This will one, keep the corrosion down and you don't have to polish as much.

If you put enough effort in to sanding and buffing, chrome center caps will be just fine. That's what I use. The only time you can tell a difference is when the brake dust starts to settle and not having the wheels clean all the time.

i'm going to paint the inside part with the cast black color so i'm stripping the paint off that part too. i am almost finished completely stripping the first wheel. the second is going really fast. the first wheel had two coats of primer and paint and the second wheel had one coat of primer and paint.

i'm using a polishing dremel bit that's kind of shaped like a funnel with wire bristles. the other is an abrasive stripping pad. i'll take pictures of them later. i'm using a battery powered dremel so it's taking me longer than if i had an electric one. my batteries keep giving out on me.

the more you sand them, the shinier they get. each finer grit paper removes the scratches from the former. i'm not going to put clearcoat on them. it will make them easier to repair if they get scuffed. as long as i keep a good coat of wax on them, i think they'll hold up nicely.

my car is a daily driver as well. my rear wheel looks shoddy right now because i didn't get a chance to finish sanding it. the outer rim of the first wheel still needs some work too. i'm willing to deal with them looking like that on my car knowing the outcome. i just yank them off when i start working on them.

as far as older rims, i would take them off and sand on a small section of paint on the inside of the wheel. i think the salad shooters are also aluminum.

i plan on having plenty of pictures from start to finish. it's no easy task and unless you're willing to dedicate a lot of time, i wouldn't recommend it. the best way to do it would be to take them somewhere and have the tires removed and the paint stripped, but being the poor boy i am, elbow grease is cheaper and i can get it in bulk. very nice DV.

I actually re did mine, the finish was so poor, instaed of polishing though, i went with a graphite finish, keeping the lip aluminum color. not toobad.
not near DV quality though!

ok, i'm done with battery powered tools. next week i'm buying an electric, and much faster, dremel. when i used the wire bristle polisher on the wheel, it looked really good, but my dremel wouldn't last long enough to do the whole thing so i just sanded them. i'm not entirely done with this one, but here's kind of what it will look like. when i get the new dremel, i'm going to make it shine like chrome. this sanding is killing my hands. i also need to get in the smaller openings better, so i'm going to have to get some more smaller dremel bits too.

the biggest problem by far is the wheels are so porous. the pores are filled with paint and you have to get enough of the aluminum sanded away to get rid of the pores.
