  • I'm confused. Are there two types of SS hoods?

I have a v6 camaro, and i'm looking to put a hood like the SS hood on there. I also want it to be functional. Now, i have checked many auto part websites, and there seems to be a couple different types. I could be wrong, but it seems like there is one that works with the factory airbox, and one that needs an aftermarket airbox to work. Thunderracing.com is selling a hood that they claim works with the current airbox, and some other sites say you need the aftermarket one. Is the aftermarket airbox any different from the one thats already on there? I dont want to buy an aftermarket airbox for $300 if i already have an airbox that will work fine.

The ones that work with the current airbox claim to raise HP 10-15, while the one that needs a seperate airbox says it can raise HP 25-30. I guess I'd like to hear what knowledge any of you have on the subject. Thanks!

Go with the cheaper one it will work on your car and the performance difference I highly doubt even exists.

I'd go for the cheaper one too. The aftermarket box their talking about is positioned right on the top of your engine. Theres not really that great of a difference. Yea they claim the hp gains but I highly doubt they are there. A well planned out nice airbox assembly can push something close over 60mph while most aftermarket ones or bulky ones will push close to them numbers over 100mph. Pretty much the whole ram air idea is just making your air system less restrictive and free flowing. Most highway driving etc... you won't see the gains unless you have a lead foot. Don't get me wrong though their are some really amazing advantages you can do with ram air. Which is something I am working on right now. Sorry I like to go off topic, anyway go with the cheaper one. And of course you already know to go with fiberglass.
